I have Star*Net 9 (Pro edition). I use it mostly for leveling adjustments, and sometimes for conventional. Most of the time I do conventional and GPS adjustments in Geolab, one reason being that I have been using geolab since 1986 and am more familiar with it and have my workflows setup to use it.?ÿ

But, I got some weird GPS data yesterday that I could not fit into my workflow, so I just exported the results out of TBC and brought it in to starnet. No problem. It is basically a radial survey off of one base point to some photo control points around a city. Not a huge area, less than a county in size.

I setup the project using the SPC grid. When I run the adjustment with no geoid model, it runs fine. If I include the "automatic" model, it says?ÿ

ERROR -- Geoid Grid Files Too Small to Contain Stations

If I tell it to use the GEOID12B.gsp file, it then says

ERROR -- Station 6001 Outside of Geoid Model Boundary

Station 6001 is the "base" point that all of the lines are radial off of.?ÿ

So, what is the correct way to include a geoid model in starnet????

Also, what is the difference between a standard SPC zone and a "GNSS SPC zone?

?ÿ

When I get the "grid files too small" error it usually means I have a bad lat/long value in the data file.

There is a little utility buried in the StarNet program files called "StarGeoid.exe" run that to create a .ght file, using the geoid files you download from the NGS website. Put that .ght file in the directory which you designate under the Project Options "Model" tab.

As Jim said - once you've got that set up - you may see that error message if you have some bad data, like if you are trying to adjust 5000/5000 local data in a state plane system.?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ

Thanks, after I posted that I figured out that I could use the same Trimble Data Exchange Format file in geolab that I used in star*net. I wasn't aware of that, because that is not in my workflow but now I know.?ÿ

Seems like they could make it easier by just using the raw NGS geoid file (as Geolab does).?ÿ

I think that every 3 years or so when I'm creating a new GHT file.?ÿ I think that it's probably a legacy from DOS days when disk and memory space was at such a premium. You then clipped out a very small piece of the larger geoid model. Using the whole thing would have crashed your 640K of RAM.?ÿ ?ÿBut it's a once in 3 years and forget it thing.

Since STAR*NET Version 8 you no longer need the StarGeoid utility.?ÿ NGS *.bin and NRCAN *.byn files can be used without conversion.
