I'm looking for a good point layout software that works with 3D models.

I have a Leica TS16 Total Station and a Leica GPS GS14, The Software I have is Micro Survey CAD,

Data Collectors, Leica Captivate, and Field Genius.

Does Leica Infinity point layout? Not sure just trying to find good solutions without buying Revit and then buying plug-ins etc...

Go yellow and you can stake 3D models to your heart's content.

<div>Curious. What do you need that Captivate and FieldGenius won't do?</div>

You could try their Infinity 30 day trial:

Do you need to layout points in 3d space?

FieldGenius has this feature using "Turn to point".

Captivate also like this:

We have Revit models sent to us from our Subs, but we don't have Revit, and looking at their packages you have to buy Revit Or Navis and Buy Autodesk point layout. I am looking into Leica Infinity.

But I saw a video where you can use MS CAD Point Prep workspace, and use Revit and IFC files.

I will try this out on Monday when I am back to all my stuff. Thank you for the TS16 video, I did not know it could do that!

Not 100% sure, but I thought the current version of Captivate would import IFC files. You might want to check that out.

Curious, TRIMBLE users....

Can TRIMBLE software do what is discussed in this thread, 3D point layout?

Using the laser pointer, can you select a point in 3d space in the software and the robot automatically turns to it? i.e. layout points on a flat or curved wall surface? Kind of what the Leica's, FieldGenius and Disto 3D do?

In case I need to use Trimble equipment / software, would be nice to know if it is possible.

What exactly are the things you want to layout in 3d space. Tolerance etc. One of the best for high precision and everything is basically in 3d space and relative to each other is a software called spatial analyzer. I used this on the metrology side. It can connect to a large swath of total stations laser trackers etc. You don’t have to set up over a known point you need not be level. So it’s pretty awesome for the different uses.

It's had that capability for a long time. Check out the link I posted at the top of the thread. Load up 3D models, or points, or whatever you want, and get to work.

And you can do comps in the models or stake out. In the field with Trimble Access. Compute points from the model etc. it is great package. Team that up with the sx12 and you can set up anywhere and tie or reference yourself from one area to another. Very similar to spatial analyzer.

We just started with Trimble Fieldlink and so far I have been pretty impressed with it. You can load 3D models and stake anything. Using it on the T100 is nice. It's not light but I don't care. I love being able to create points on the fly simply by touching the line work where you want the point. They just integrated the measure rounds function so I can set control with more confidence.

I have never used the Trimble field link software. What is its intended use for. I used Trimble survey controller and now Trimble access.

Of course you can auto turn, depending on the application there will be some trial and error involved in finding the position you want to stake.

The weak point with Trimble on this is not software but hardware, the reflectorless functionality on S series guns is not nearly what it is on Leica models and with the exception of the green laser on the SX12 (which is a beast) the lasers on S series guns is very faint.

@OleManRiver Trimble FieldLink is great stuff.

It comes from the Building&Construction line.

Its workflows are tightly optimised around construction layout and scan point clouds.

And I believe it works with the Trimble Ri.

But is not really suited for boundary work.

Gotcha. So it’s focused on BIM or any construction. Earthwork etc.

While Leica Infinity doesn't have built-in point layout functionality, there are some good options that work with your Leica equipment and avoid the Revit + plugin route:

Autodesk Point Layout - This software directly connects your 3D model (from various BIM software) to field layout workflows. It integrates seamlessly with Leica Geosystems instruments like your TS16 and data collectors running Captivate or FieldGenius. You can export points directly for stakeout and even push them to the BIM360 Layout mobile app for real-time collaboration.

Trimble Field Link: This software caters specifically to construction layout. It allows you to create 2D and 3D points directly from your existing design files (AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp) and works with Trimble instruments. While it might not be your exact brand preference, it's a strong contender with proven efficiency gains for layout projects.

If you anticipate complex projects requiring BIM integration, then Autodesk Point Layout might be a future-proof option. It provides a strong bridge between design and field execution.

Check out Trimble Access YouTube channel at the latest features for BIM staking in Trimble access 2024. They just released this version a little bit ago but some added benefits in what you are looking at doing.
