For those of you in the Willamette valley using Salem Printing & Blue for
Silver Halide copies....

I just got off the phone with their shop in Corvallis.

I was told that their machine is broken, and given the expense of the
media, and repair cost....likely not repair it.

Alternate plans, engage! :pinch:

Talk to the County Surveyor for reasonable options. I am still using HP ink and proper media. However, the plotter is going quickly. Not sure what I will do then.

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. Typing class 9th grade!

Idaho is going through a law change for silver emulsion. We hope to have it on the floor by next year. No one is making it anymore and many counties are going to other media (ie electronic or mylar) for recording.

Now that Bob Hovden and Chuck Pearson have retired the time may be ripe for PLSO to revisit the issue with OACES. My understanding is that Mr. Hovden was the real hardliner.

OACES = Oregon Association of County Engineers and Surveyors
PLSO = Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon

What is silver halide?

We do inkjet on polyester film intended for inkjet. Believe me, it is permanent and doesn't smear.

Our County has been trying to deal with this for the past year or so. The materials and chemicals are becoming more and more difficult to obtain. Most of the counties in Idaho have allowed alternatives but our recording clerk is sticking to the law...to the point of saying that no plats will be recorded if there's not a Silver Emulsion copy(I'm sure there would've been a battle if that were to happen).

Luckily, our planning director spearheaded an effort to submit a change and it should be submitted at the next session. It's HB138 and simply gives ALTERNATIVES to the SE copy. Hopefully this will do the trick. The suppliers of the SE materials recognize the shortage and have already 'adjusted' the costs to about double what they were last year.

Had same problem with "Linen" here in NJ a number of years ago. After some education with Counties we now do 4 mil mylar. excerpt from Recordation Law below.

d. To be accepted for recording, a map shall be clearly and legibly drawn in black ink on
translucent tracing cloth, translucent mylars at least 4 mils thick or its equivalent, of good
quality, with signatures in ink, or as an equivalent reproduction on photographic fixed line
mylar 4 mils thick with signatures in black ink or its equivalent and accompanied by a cloth
print or photographic fixed line mylar 4 mils thick duplicate; and one of six standard sizes: 8 1/2" x 13", 30" x 42", 24" x 36", 11" x 17", 18" x 24" or 15" x 21" as measured from cutting
edges. If one sheet is not of sufficient size to contain the entire territory, the map may be
divided into sections to be shown on separate sheets of equal sizes, with references on each
sheet to the adjoining sheets.

It sure would be nice if the county recorders could actually agree on the interpretation of the current state law. I work in multiple counties in ID and each one has a different requirement using the same state law. Some want mylars, some want mylars with spray, some want paper only....

Can't wait for the new law. It appears to much better.

I know, right. Got to have a list for each county with their recorder requirements.

There is a firm in Redmond that to the best of my
knowledge still makes photo (silver halide) mylars.

Silver Halide is an emulsion film based process for making copies on mylar (the popular media seemingly in Oregon is 4mill double matte).

It used to be easy as can be to run a 11x17 or 18x24 paper copy, then run down and for a modest fee get a nice (and archivable according to the state archives) mylar copy to sign and submit for filing.

Thanks Scott!

It would take a bit of mailing from here in the valley... but, might be worth it for the right project!

Seems like Salem Printing and Blueprint was the main player for the Willamette Valley for so long, makes me wonder if there's any competition out there who's going to take up the slack.
