Hello again everyone,
A short time ago I posted about cogo software (QuickCogo) I had written a long time ago but am again offering through my re-incarnated website. However, for reasons I hope you will help me discover, nobody seems interested. In earlier years it sold reasonably well and received many compliments. With several hundred copies sold, there were only 2 returns, one of which was re-purchased. The program has not materially changed and maybe that's the issue but I don't think so. No doubt there are better ones out there and I can live with that but if there is some major flaw with mine or the website from which it is sold, I would very much like to know. I also send personalized emails to many land surveyors in various states telling them about the website and hoping they go there so I don't have to rely upon random visitors but obviously I am still missing the mark. Incidentally, my google ranking is very low but I would need an unaffordable seo expert to help me there. I have done what I can from home but there needs to be fresh eyes and minds involved. Therefore I am asking for your help. Where could I find a more captive audience than a group of seasoned and knowledgeable land surveyors like you? I am not asking for you to fix any problems but only to point them out. There are 3 main things I would appreciate having someone do. 1. Go to the website, https://quickcogo.net download the evaluation version of the program (it is safe) and briefly check it out with the pretended intent you are looking for something for yourself. Is there something that would prevent you or others from wanting to purchase? 2. Check out the website to see if it is easily navigated, understood, has no broken links, etc. What is your general impression, keeping in mind it is home made? 3. Email me ([email protected]) and have me send to you the email I am sending to other surveyors and tell me your thoughts. (There are several I send but will only send the most recent to you)

None of what I have written is a sales ploy and I am not trying to exploit surveyorconnect members. In fact, participants are welcome to have the full program free to help compensate for time spent.

I have made my own list of possible issues but want to see if others find any of the same. Be brutally honest in your assessment of the 3 items. Don't worry about hurting my feelings. I really need your honest and candid appraisal so I can make informed decisions. Thank you very much in advance for your kind assistance. If you can help within the next 2 weeks, it would be much appreciated but please don't put off anything of your own. My request can wait. I WISH YOU AND YOURS A VERY WONDERFUL AND HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON.

Please send replies to my email as non-participants here would not know the context of them. But use your own judgment or what Wendell thinks should be done.

Sincerely,

Jim Schuchert

I would say the main reason for the lack of interest in your stand alone software is that every data collector already has a COGO program.

So why would I use your stand alone version and then have to go thru the hassle of importing the coordinates from it into my data collector.

Jim, I'll be interested in giving it a trial run, but we are now in the process of moving and the wifi in the new place won't be hooked up until next week. I possibly have some side drafting work lined up and this might be the type of software that would work well for me. I only breezed over the specs and didn't see anything like minimum RAM (although if it will run on an Android I'm pretty sure my laptop can handle it), also how compatible is it with other software's like ACAD & Bentley, at this point I know that?ÿ my one potential client is using Briscad, which I also need to check out and that person has some other acquaintances that might need my services. I will however download your trial version and give it a go when I am able.

Jim, I may take a look at your COGO also.?ÿ Some years ago I helped develop software for the HP-41.?ÿ It had a slick layout program.?ÿ I still use an old COGO to check something that does not look right in my data collector or CADD program, but like Mike said most software today has a COGO built in.

@mike-davis That's good feedback. Thank you very much. It just goes to show how out of touch I am with the real world now.?ÿ The fact that others already have their own cogo was on my list.?ÿ I guess the only reason, then, is that there may features unique in mine that are not in the others, and of course the low cost.?ÿ Some of my users are retired and just looking for something to stay in the game. Thank you for your time to make your assessment.

@richard-germiller Thank you very much for your reply.?ÿ I believe the answers to your questions will be found when you use the evaluation. I am not familiar with the one you noted.?ÿ I understand perfectly about other commitments you have so that is not a problem. Just do it when you can and thanks again for you willingness to help.

@acd-surveyor Thank you very much for your reply and willingness to help. I believe I must be a few years too late with my program and at least a decade or more to start making major revisions.?ÿ Anyway, the feedback I am getting is just what I needed so thanks again.

I will take a look, but I would represent a VERY small target market. I rarely perform any surveying these days, but do have occasions to help someone where a standalone COGO program would come in handy. Many years ago (25+) I used a DOS program called CC-Surveyor that was in the public domain. It did have sort of a crude "CAD" component in that you could view the points in a "map" screen and connect them to produce minimal linework, including arcs. It was a solid COGO program (at the time) that I wore the keys out using for several years.

?ÿ

@spmpls Thank you.?ÿ I know what you mean about wearing the keys out. I had heard of "CC-Surveyor" but never used it. However, someone still asked about the dos version of my program.?ÿ In some respects those really were the "good ole days" because the options were few. Thanks again for your response and thanks to Wendell for this forum.

I tried installing it on Windows 10 64 bit. It seemed to install OK. When I tried to run it I got the following error message:

Component MSCOMCTL.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

I tried to uninstall it and it was not listed in "Add or remove programs" so there was no automated way to uninstall it.

A clean and complete uninstall procedure is the most important thing.

@ashton Very sorry about that.?ÿ I'm sure others have experienced the same thing but failed to contact me.?ÿ Somewhere I had noted that if that message appears, right click the yellow icon and select "run as administrator". It will then load properly and is the only time you will have to do it thereafter.?ÿ Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Please retry it with that correction and I will update the website instructions.?ÿ After full installation it should be listed in "Add or Remove".

@jschuchert Sorry, I have very little tolerance for buggy installation procedures. I will not be looking at this any further.

@ashton Sorry to hear that but I understand and don't blame you.?ÿ I have now emphasized on the website what to do if that occurs again.?ÿ I definitely had inadequately addressed the problem when you were there. But I am very grateful that you found it and brought it to my attention before anyone else blindly ran into it.?ÿ It doesn't happen in my test runs but I know it is lurking around.?ÿ I will provide a free link to the full program if you are interested.?ÿ Just email me.?ÿ?ÿ
