So they converted well? I wanted to try to convert them for you to see how it worked but I was too busy.

I've tried to convert AutoCAD c3d files to MicroStation before and it worked but I'm not sure how well since I know very little about MicroStation.

Yes, this site is great. But I see you asking for file conversations at least once a month.

This is bit of a pet peeve of mine. Though we are NOT competing for the same clientele, you and I both build surface models for our clients.

The difference is I own all my tools, I need to create the deliverable my clients pay for.

I own the current versions of my software:

Currently own:
Microstation v8i
InRoads v8i
Carlson TakeOff 2014
AutoCAD 2014
Global Mapper 2014
Trimble Bussiness Center
Topcon Magnet Tools 2.5

6 Topcon L1/L2 GPS RTK GNSS Receivers
3 Ashtech L1 GPS
1 Topcon GPT9003 Robot
1 Topcon DL-502 Digital Level
1 Topcon GPT-3003 Total Stations
4 Data Collectors

I would feel guilty asking others to do my work for free, while my clients are paying me for this service.

It's kinda like an auto mechanic running a business, while borrowing the tools from his neighbor.

Hey, if you don't want to do it for free then don't. There are others that are willing to do it for him.

Four times in the last year. When it gets to six a year maybe I will invest.
I deliver what the client wants and needs and in the format they desire.

Conversion is not a time consuming job. Less than 30 seconds for each file? You guys spend more time chatting on this board. There is no difference between asking an opinion for a survey situation or problem. Will you also be like a lawyer that will charge for these "opinions" threads on this forum?

Good point. Conversion of MicroStation/InRoads drawing files is a simple matter of just hitting the "Load MicroStation file" button on the Carlson Survey menu. Takes no time at all.
We've got to remember that there are a lot of independent surveyors out there that cannot yet afford 17 different software packages on top of everything else. Some hire out drafters to work on the side that have the software and then they can focus on the field work. Still, some cannot afford that.
A few conversions to help our a fellow surveyor should not be an issue at all. If we don't help each other out from time to time, we are all doomed. If you don't want to help, don't. If others want to help, that's their choice. There are too many other things to gripe about.

Invest, yes that is the word. There is some value in that.

It might be prudent to form a business agreement with one of your benefactors, say file conversions at $50 per MB or something, and pass on the cost to your client. It would be much cheaper, even in the long run, than slapping down several thousand dollars on software. After all, the time involved is very little - it's the investment in software that has to be recovered.
