6 cartridges at $75.00 a pop plus the Service Head tray at $60.00
Plotter would clean heads once a week at 2:00 am

Went and purchased a HP design jet #111 for 1066.00
and it weights half as much and at times take it on the road.

As you can tell totally disappointed in the IPF 610 24 inch

Had a hp 330 for 7 years should have skipped the canon and got another HP yes HP

UNless canon has fixed the ink/head hog go hp

Thanks for the review, doesn't sound so good.

I found some info on print head life. Says about 4000 24x36 plots. That would last me well beyond 2 years, probably well past 5 years. Did your print head wear out or was it defective some way? I couldn't find that it must be replaced every two years. Online cost for print head was about $500. Would it save ink if it was turned off most of the time?

I'll go look at the HP plotters. I can't complain about the HP DesignJet 600. It never wore out on me just become obsolete. It won't plot all the new shades or colors. It won't even hook up a most computers that no longer have a parallel port. I need a network ready unit, tired of fighting all that with the old printers.

I've had an HP 500 & HP 800. Both are basically the same machine with the 800 being fully loaded and the 500 plain. I think they've come out with the designjet 510 which is just an update of the same basic machine. Solid plotters very little maint. required.

The only reason i went to canon was i think my HP 330 lasted to long??

As far as color output its more about the paper than the plotter to a point.

So go with a HP in the 60 lb weight class maybe a bit higher than
Hp 111 Designjet

But for day in day out line color the HP111 on good paper is great.

As you mentioned the was a head recall after a 2 years when most low mile
units like mine where of warrenty thanks Canon.

Oh yes a new head requires lots of ink FROM Canon

+1 to the iPF being a dog. I have a 36" iPF700 and while it prints beautifully, it's Achilles is the printhead design. I'm ready for my 3rd printhead at $700 or so a pop. It doesn't seem to crazy on ink considering the coverage but it also gobbles up maintenance cartridges at a rate like no other to go with the printhead issues.

I went with the Canon for it's lower cost of entry and better print quality but the cost of maintenance/repair has made it much more expensive than any HP I've ever owned. The comparable HP's have individual printheads for each color vs the Canon unit that if one portion goes bad, the whole thing has to be changed out. For me, every 2years like clockwork I get a streak in the cyan. Everyone else I've read about on the web gets the same thing. I personally think its a design flaw. Regardless, stay away from them.

I'll third the motion. I replaced a HP750 36" printer with the Cannon wide throat IPF 700. Have not been pleased with the unit. It uses ink like a horse drinking water after a long hard ride. If you don't print every day it will use a good bit of time and ink doing it's cleaning routine. All the cartridges have to be in the machine or it's no go. The HP750, I just usually keep only the black ink in the machine. I suppose I have made less than 2000 prints on the Canon in about three years, it is yelling for a print head now. I was told by the selling agent to leave the printer on and it would use one picoliter of ink from time to time just clearing out the lines and print head. I don't have any idea how much a picoliter is but a full deck of print cartridges is six cartridges and the last ones I got were $60 each. There are times it will take ten to fifteen minutes to make up it's mind that everything is cleaned out and ready to print. Now it is smudging a bit at the training end of the media, don't have any idea what that is about. So it sits in the corner and dares me to spend more to get it serviced. Then there is the tray where the unused ink goes that is used in the cleaning before the printer is ready. So I am back to the HP750. I suppose if the Canon was used in a high output office it might be ok but for the casual user it is a sink hole for money.

I'll probably go with the HP 510. More money at start but most likely more economical for the long haul. I hate computer equipment problems. Must be a lot of value in keeping them to a minimum.

If this plotter lasts as long as the last I don't think I'll ever need another.
