I am am disappointed that I have waited this long to upgrade my computers... But the ones I have are still doing so I have just kept using them. My Desktops are Dell Precision 390s running windows XP and we have two dell precision M90 laptops both XP.... All have 4gb RAM.

I need a really good portable laptop that can run the heck out if Carlson iCAD, quickbooks, MS office, and acrobat..... I want it to be fast, reliable, portable, and have good battery life. Watching MSNBC the new intel chips are super small so I want thin and light. I think I should wait until the holiday season for the new laptops to come out, what do you think?

I need my desktops to be reliable and fast.

I would appreciate any and all info. Thanks!

If you can wait you should start seeing some new
laptops with the Intel 14nm Broadwell chip for the holidays.
Should be faster with better graphics and battery life.

You want lots a RAM (8Gb-32Gb), and need a 64bit operating system to access it. You want a good video card with its own memory. Make sure it can drive multiple monitors. IMHO, those are the important parts.

Almost any processor above Pentium is going to be way faster than what you are used to.

I bought one of these yanked out the 1tb hdd and installed a 256gb ssd (Kingston) and it is a rocket ship!

Boots up Win 8.1 in 7 seconds and LDD 2006 in 3, yes three seconds. Faster than my Google Nexus 10 android.

I moved into the new age of computers back in January with a purchase from THESE GUYS that are located in Jacksonville, Texas about two hours away and they are.

I was able to get two computers for $650 that has Pentium duo core and a Quad Core delivering 3.4mhz to Win7 64bit Professional and still had serial ports that hooks to my HP48s and other serial connections.

The command prompt will run Carlson Surveyor 1, DOS COGO.

One is used for downloads and file management and the other is connected to the entertainment center. Computing on a 55in widecreen LED is amazing.

Still need to put Carlson CES on there and they will be full powered for me.

So far my XPs are surviving on the net and haven't skipped a beat. They are behind a wireless system with battery backup that is working better than the wired units ever did.

B-)

We love our Precision 390's. Long in the tooth, but still kickin'

No matter what you buy, GET AN SSD FOR THE MAIN DRIVE!

Absolutely positively the most amazing change in speed you'll ever see...even more than lots of RAM...but you need that too.

I need new computers... Desktops then?

I can wait on the laptops and the new stuff comes out soon, so I can wait.... Back to the desktops. I checked out the new dell presision towers only to find them costly, are they going to be the workhorses of old like the 390s or are they like throwing money in the wind?

And I assume windows 8pro and and I should get "touch screen" type screen with mouse for drafftig and what not? Are you running 7,8?pro?

If you are looking for a good laptop to run everything smoothly. Don't buy brand like HP, DELL, COMPAQ. Most brand they are selling at Futureshop or Bestbuy are junk and overpriced computer that is good for running facebook. To have an idea look at ibuypower dot com and newegg. Look for a gaming computer because it powered to run the latest game and software.

Most good computer now have around 8GB Ram to 16 GB Ram, well you really dont need 16GB. Buying a laptop is like buying a new car, look at detail, cost, etc because you will stuck with the laptop for another 5 years.

Not being an IT guy; what are the advantages to doing this? Isn't 1tb a lot bigger than 256gb?

Like I said; I'm no Nick...

I went from a Precision 390 to a Precision 490, and then to a Precision T7500. The only reason for the upgrades was processor speed; they all worked fine upon retirement. (I still have the 490 sitting in a corner just because I hate to throw it out, but I haven't even turned it on in a year or so.) The T7500 is running Windows 7-64, and seems every bit as sturdy as its predecessors, only much faster.
