Export to DTM or DXF files so that I can upload them to my TDS Ranger data collector. Is there anyway to do this without having a third software like Foresight or Survey Link?
If I do have to have Foresight or Survey Link, do any of you have a copy of it laying around you'd part with?

In my Carlson Survey standalone. I do not have an Intellicad version, but things are pretty standard in the Carlson world.

same thing in iCAD... save as> click the pull down and select DXF
You should be able to wblock any part of your drawing to dxf. It can be done in ACAD. Handy.
Binary or ASCII?
it gives me several options starting with autocad 2007 with two types of dxf files binary and ascii all the way to before release 10.
Then how do I get it in my collector? I created one ascii type and tried to import it into my job...didnt work well.

I don't know how to use the DXF files in my Surveyor+ but I have uploaded them from my Carlson 2007 w/icad just to prove that I could. I think you have to also transfer cogo points from your PC to your DC via a .txt (or .asc) file.
sorry, the save as feature in carlson gives me those options
my buddy who has Carlson w/ Embedded AutoCad says that he has the three DXF file options, but I seem to have many more to choose from.
I shot a topo in the field today, downloaded it and created a surface and was trying to bring that surface into the file already containing the points in my Ranger.

Autocad or Intellicad??
A little change from the thread, for all you guys using Intellicad with Carlson what do you think? I have Carlson with Autocad (2006) and I was thinking of buying another copy should I go with acad or intellicad?

Question 1:
I would think that with any CAD package, exporting/saving to *.DXF should be easily done. Another option if the Ranger allows would be to export your surface data to LandXML or *.ttm (Trimble DC).

My last experience was with Autocad Land Desktop,
I believe this was a superior product, however, Intellicad is much cheaper and just getting started as I am, it has been an adjustment getting used to it. I feel that it generally will do what I want it to do, but I have to get used to it. I had no prior experience with Carlson either, coming from Auto/Softdesk or whatever. So that is also a huge adjustment.
I would need to use it for another six months before I could say definitively yay or nay. 🙂

The question does not have a simple answer. There is value in both products at their price points. If your work is not drafting intensive then Intellicad will do the job. If you are doing serious mapping you are probably going to want ACAD. If your deliverable is typically a paper drawing then Intellicad will probably be fine. If you are delivering .dwgs to a project team, then ACAD is probably preferable.
If you have multiple seats then a strategy that may work is to outfit your techs who do mostly calcs and light drafting with the Intellicad version and get the ACAD version for your draftsman.

From what I hear... if you are ingrained into the ACAD variety, it is well worth it to pay to stay. Ask Dennis Fenton (D.J. Fenton on here).
