I have been traveling a good deal, and it is sometimes hard to keep the two computers synced up with the most current files, and not overwrite the most updated file.

I am considering using Dropbox as my working directory for my drawings.

I currently use C:Projects1234 Jobname as my working directory, both on the laptop and desktop.

Does anyone see any potential issues with this?

Thanks in advance,
Jimmy

I LOVE Dropbox -- both for work and personal.

I believe you would have to change your directory to:

C:dropboxProjects1234 Jobname

I use a utility called "Beyond Compare" as an aid to keeping my laptop sync'd with the company network project files. It isn't automatic, but that's okay by me.

I'm not too keen on any web based storage of critical project files. I like to maintain control of that. Dropbox could be hacked, or evaporate, tomorrow, and all they could say is "sorry". So if you go that way make sure you have a backup of that backup.

Beyond that, have you tried it for access speed?

I'm in the same boat and trying the same thing. I purchased a laptop and dropbox space over the weekend. The initial 15 gig upload of my projects folder took over a day, but the syncing of changes only seems to take minutes. I plan on working out of the local dropbox folder on both ends so everything sync's automatically. I also uploaded my Carlson Settings folder to dropbox and have Carlson set to use that location to save intial setup time and keep settings the same on both ends. I also plan on backing up to my local external hard drive.

Actually dropbox is good or you could go get Google drive or one of the many others. Nice thing is the setup. Make sure that your files are stored on both the laptop, dropbox (or other cloud) and the desktop. Then the software will keep all files synced as you use them. And if you are unavailable from the cloud, then you have the files on your computer. Once you get back to available, the cloud updates and so does the other computer(s). This is the setup I use for some of my files. Kind of a redundant backup.

I use dropbox for temporary stuff. Free.

Mozy.com is where I keep my main daily backups. $40/month now...

Hmmm, maybe I need to look at options again ? That mozy fee has crept up on me, but gosh it works well I often access files from my iPhone, pretty nifty.

A key feature for me is that some, but not many, services will allow you to sync your existing folders, not just your "dropbox" or whatever. So you can use the more normal default folder in which your software will store your files.

I use a free account from Tresorit to sync my entire Documents folder between laptop, desktop and the cloud. I store large photos elsewhere so they don't waste space and bandwidth.
Used to use Sugarsync but this no longer has a free option.

yes, use sync toy to keep selected files and folders synced with your dropbox folder. Many of the big construction projects here create and share the construction drawings on a shared dropbox folder.

Everyday before going to site you can check to see if there are any plan updates before even getting to site.

Works well.

Started using SyncToy when I went from Windows XP to Windows 7 Pro several years ago. SyncToy is basically a replacement for Briefcase that was in Win98 through Win XP. There were some problems opening the briefcase files in Windows 7. SyncToy was the fix and works well after you setup folder pairs. You need to either share the laptop drive with the desktop or uses a thumb/removable drive as a transfer medium.

That's pretty well what we do. Dropbox for all survey related stuff.

Change a job - synced
Update an Autocad routine - synced
etc, etc, etc

Does that mean you are storing the files twice on your local drive?
