And I mean geeks in the nicest of ways.

OK, I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit running on an AMD quad core processor with 16 Gb of ram & on-board graphics.

I'm currently trying to use a 1 m. horiz resolution lidar file covering about 5000 ac. in [REDACTED] (GM) v.13.01 to calculate some watershed areas.

The lidar file is understandably huge, and just pan & zoom is painfully slow, or I get the "(Not Responding)" message from GM until something finally happens

However, watching memory & cpu usage stats in Task Manager shows that GM never uses more than 25% of the processor and 2-3 Gb of the available ram.

So, can I speed things up? If so, how? Would installing a dedicated graphics card be worth the investment? I'm hoping I can finish this little project before I die of old age....

Thanks!

SS

I'd say what you need is actually a better graphics card. Even though your CPU might not have much strain, I'd guess that your GPU is completely maxed out. Building a computer for point clouds is actually closer to building a gaming rig then it is about building a business pc. All about that GPU and getting a low transfer time on it as well.

Sounds good to me. I have an NVIDIA QUADRO k4000 in my station and it can handle a good number of points.

On the other side, if you want someone to reduce the number of points in your cloud, let me know and I can shave off a few.

Have you tried the [REDACTED] support? They have an extremely good support program and forum.

If you do not have a separate graphics card you need to get one. There are allot of them out there but I have always been an Nvidia fan. You will need to make sure your applications are ste to use the graphics card once you install them. Nvidia has a nice interface that will be installed with the drivers and is easy to use.

It's the onboard graphics card, without a doubt.

Check out MSI GEForce video cards

I had 1gb cards that were adequate. After a lightning event 18mos ago, replaced them with GTX 650ti 2gb Boost cards and nothing has slowed them down.

They have some 1gb and larger video cards offering a variety of monitor plugs, that are reasonable priced and provide great results.

They are also controlled by Nvidia chipsets.

As a Computer enthusiast for the last 35 years I would like to say.

a) Geeks are Circus side show people. Tattoos on the face weird piercings... The kid from school that would lick the bottom of his shoe on a dare.

b) nerds are people that "geek" on technology or other educational pursuits. (IE surveyors)

c) Marchitecture (nerd speak) is alive and well. An AMD quad-core could mean any CPU developed in the last ten years from their first generation multi core CPUs to their latest APUs, could be high power or low power. I assume this is an older system since a MODERN (and modern in CPU terms means the last year) CPU from AMD actually is 90% GPU. No way would you need a discrete GPU if you had a modern AMD system.

d) If you bought a package PC you could list the model number or use your computer to say what hardware you have. (In windows 7 Right click Computer and select properties for your CPU model number and amount of memory you have installed. You will need to do right click and select manage on computer and device manager and display adapter to show what video card odel you have.

e) A better option is to download CPU-Z and either screenshot the tabs or post a link to your submission or just tell us what you are running. You dont even need to install CPUz you can DL a portable version and run it 🙂

At this time I am too drunk/lazy to look up your software and see what the hardware requirements are. If you include that information in your post it would make it easier for me in the future. Hopefully I can help you all in the future with what is considered "common courtesy" coming from PC message board background 🙂

The problem is (and why I might seem so aloof) proprietary packages (hardware and software) preclude a general answer of "get this card". Just because your software wants this device does not mean your hardware supports it. On at a minimum of 4 levels. (Do you have a physical slot for it, does that slot communicate fast enough to utilize it, is your CPU powerful to actually utilize the speed and most importantly is your power supply capable of handling the upgrade).

Hope that helps.

If your PC guy does not recommend it... do a backup first. not just of your HDD but your BIOS too.

Rich

PS> Hoogannn!!!

Computer Nerds - help me, please!

Rich-

Please, I meant no offense. I shall forevermore refer to those more knowledgeable than myself as "nerds", rather than geeks. As nearly everyone is more knowledgeable than I, I guess that makes nearly everyone a nerd. (Especially my wife!)

Any-old-how, if you'd be willing to give an ignorant fat Saxon dude some advice on his current dilemma, I'd be grateful!

So, here's the CV of the machine:

Board:
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-880GA-UD3H
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. FF 03/07/2011

Processor:
3.40 gigahertz AMD Phenom II X4 965
256 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (4 total)
Not hyper-threaded

OS:
Windows 7 Professional (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)

Ram:
15870 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
Slot 'A0' has 4096 MB
Slot 'A1' has 4096 MB
Slot 'A2' has 4096 MB
Slot 'A3' has 4096 MB

Drives:
A: 3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]
C: Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 [Hard drive] (240.06 GB) -- drive 1
D: ASUS DRW-24B1ST a ATA Device [Optical drive]
E: WDC WD5000AAKB-00H8A SCSI Disk Device (500.11 GB) -- drive 0

Display:
ATI Radeon HD 4250 [Display adapter]
Acer AL2016W [Monitor] (20.0"vis, s/n ETL640C17271602EAF4052, April 2007)
Acer X203H [Monitor] (19.9"vis, s/n ETLEX04007952025214331, December 2009)

Power Supply:
CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3

I know that being 4 years old it's an antique, but so far it's worked well for me.

The software in question is [REDACTED] v. 13.01 (Yes, I know the current version is 16, but 'till now, it's done everything I need)

Carlson 2012 in Acad.

Thanks!

SS

Are you sure that you're using 64-bit version of [REDACTED]? 32-bit programms are very limited in amount of RAM they can use.
