I really can't help you, but I would suggest something however.

I've got an IT guy that works on our network and he has helped us out several times with our "ol' Bessie" software and hardware. We've got several older machines that run just fine. We keep them around for just that case. He has no problem keeping them in good shape for us.

One that comes to mind is my Topcon PC-CDU program to download static sessions on the GR5s. I've never gotten anything newer that XP to recognize the patch cable. The support has several "patches" that simply either don't install properly, don't work, or screw up the USB config so seriously it makes you want take a three pound hammer to them. We also have several versions of TDS (DOS) that one crew still uses regularly.

Keep your old machines around in good working order. There is nothing wrong with that.

I have an old laptop that had an old version of Eagle Point and AutoCAD on there that I wanted to keep. It was probably 14 or 15 years old. My guru was able to "clone" the old hard-drive and give me a brand-spanking new set-up with everything working great. We keep that one around for crews that are staying on the road.

I hear you, brother, that is why there is a 10 year old laptop still on my desk along with my 64bit. But it has COPD, Arthritis, and Dementia. My guru (named Doss, btw) said there is no hope- just a matter of time.

Is the hardware lock USB or serial? If it is USB, new drivers from Sentinel http://www.safenet-inc.com/support-downloads/sentinel-drivers/ . If it is the old parallel lock, Spectra will swap it out but you have to send in the lock so you'd be without it for a few days.

You should ask your support guy to let you know if anybody is upgrading an old machine (that will suit your purposes). Perhaps another man's trash could become your treasure.

How about a new laptop with Windows 7 32bit ?

I have run the program on a 64 bit machine. The problem I ran into was transferring to and from the data collector which was an old ranger with serial port. The program itself and hardware lock seemed to run ok.

I have Foresight DXM running on my Windows 64bit laptop. I think Daniel is right about the drivers, however, I never could get my HASP USB key to work on the new laptop.

What kind if USB key is your hardware lock? I think mine is a Sentinel Rainbow lock. (It's in the office), and I'm at the house.

I hope you can figure it out. DXM is a very handy program.

Check out these guys. They have some very innovative solutions for hardware key locks. http://www.safe-key.com I used to use their software imitation to run SKI-Pro without a key lock on a machine without a parallel printer port. They also have solutions to back up you dongle so if it is lost or damaged you are not at the vendors mercy for a replacement. http://www.safe-key.com

64bit, Windows 7, Rainbow USB hardware lock, all works fine.

I installed the program from the CD and the program worked as well as it did on the computer when it was a 32bit XP system.
