We have a project with the following requirement

Section 4 -Survey in electronic media requirements:
Provide the information on a CD or other secure electronic media.
Survey in electronic media shall meet the requirements of the United States National CAD Standard (NCS)-Version 6.0 as follows:

1. Any user may define a User Definable or Unassigned Level. Submit revised level list.
2.Provide the level schedule (indicating levels and descriptions actually used) within the CAD drawing file along with a hard copy.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance.

I read that as saying that if you make a new layer not in the US National CAD standard you have to tell them you did it.

The National CAD Standard is a joke. The idea is great, don't get me wrong, but the fact that you have to pay a not so insignificant sum of money to get a copy is a real limiting factor to its effectiveness.

There is a free option that is National CAD standard compliant. The U.S. Department of Defense A/E/C Standard that has been mentioned here a number of times The following is from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers CAD BIM Technology Center (linked above) web site:
The A/E/C CAD Standard and A/E/C Graphics Standard documents have been developed by the CAD/BIM Technology Center to eliminate redundant Computer-Aided Design (CAD) standardization efforts within the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Federal Government. These documents are part of an initiative to develop a nonproprietary CAD standard that incorporates existing industry, national, and international standards and to develop data standards that address the entire life cycle of facilities within the DoD.
Documentation and files for both AutoCAD and Microstation are available for download from the site.

When the architects took the AIA Cad Standard and rebranded it the "National CAD Standard" there was a lot of push by those that don't work with CAD much to adopt it for civil projects. Hey... It's the National CAD Standard after all. The COE went in and tweaked it to develop their version of the "National CAD Standard" (as Dallas has linked) - it's better for civil/survey than the non-COE version of the "National CAD Standard". In V5 (at least that's when I first noticed it) they added VN for survey node (points) - that was good. I really like the flexibility of the "Standard" e.g. "1. Any user may define a User Definable or Unassigned Level." I like a Standard that is unique to each user.

When the architects co-opted the term "National CAD Standard" our firm took direct action and moved to the Galactic CAD Standard... It's clearly better than the National or even Global CAD Standard...I know, we'll be second to the Universal CAD Standard when it comes out but we're not know-it-alls.
