If you weren't surveyin what would you do (for a career)?
I starting to get that "burnt out" feeling and am considering other possibilities. I'm in the final stretch (one more interview) of getting into the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney financial advisor training program, but I still don't know what I'm going to say if they offer me the position.
Web development. Oh, wait... no, don't do that. 😉

From your picture it's apparent I don't have the facial hair for the interweb biz. That and I don't really care for Doritos and Mountain Dew 😉
I'd think a perfect fit to the mindset of a surveyor would be a professional golfer. It's involves everything we do and enjoy, except it pays better.
Had I only known....
I would be a "Porn Star", Buck Naked...
Coincidentally, I've just returned from a Barnes and Noble in Chico with a new book - "Comedy Writing Secret."
Hey, is this thing on?
Don
I have no idea what else I would have done for a career?
Well, I am past the age of looking for a job?

The things I have done.
Surveying came along after the software engineering fell apart.
Before surveying: I was a farm hand, carpenter and some time bootlegger.
Now I'm back programming again and wouldn't mind a bit to survey again.

To an extent I am in a like boat. I am looking towards the medical field so I can help folks. A book that's helped me out a bit is "what color is your parachute ", more just a different way of looking at the job hunt.
Financial advisor? That's a dog eat dog world. Got yer milk bone under wear on?
Yuk-Yuk.
That's what my wife does in the comfort of our home. But she does miss the comradery and the day to day inter reaction with other fellow employees. On the flip side, she can climb straight out of bed in her pajamas and go to work. Her hours are flexible also, but there are deadlines.
You'll have busy seasons and slow seasons, so plan ahead....
Firefighter...
Easy one. Cabinets and finish carpenter.
ditto Paden
I carpentered a lot. I loved doing finish trim work on a few houses I helped build.
Building furniture would be good.
Game warden

Ha! Neither do I. 🙂
Hey, I have an idea -- I bet you'd be perfectly suited for an editor gig at a surveying magazine.
I'm getting a little burnt out myself. My wife and I are talking about trying to snatch up houses for rental income. I'm a pretty handy with home projects/repairs. I'm seriously considering slowly transitioning towards that for retirement.
Powderboy for Playboy photographic sessions.
If that position isn't available, I would be willing to take a shot at being __________ Czar for the U.S. Government. Not too particular as to what they put in the blank, so long as I get to use the title "Czar".
If that isn't available, then I would consider serving on the boards for several international corporations in need of a board member with a rural background.
Another job I've considered for my golden years is to be a Wal-Mart byer. It's much like being a Wal-Mart greeter. You sit near an exit and say "bye" and wave as the customers leave the store.

Boy, I'm with you. I've been surveying now for about 33 years and I'm losing interest. I've day-dreamed rebuilding cars or maybe houses. But I often wonder if I made the switch, would I day-dream going back into surveying?
a vagabond ... professional or not..
Seriously..
