Had another surveyor lose his base to thieves here, relatively new thing. Drug scourge no doubt and it's getting worse. Got me thinking ... Thieves aren't all that bright, but they'd probably think twice after seeing one of these plastered on the equipment.
I hate to be a naysayer, but when I ran the lab for an asphalt producer we lost several of these out of the back of trucks:
Every one of them was placarded on at least three sides. Didn't make a bit of difference. Nobody at the pawn shops would touch them. I think we eventually recovered them all when the county motor-grader would see them thrown in the ditch.
People will steal anything that "looks" like it might have a hint of value.
Funny you post that pic, I took a Troxler test less than an hour ago.
We only have to shoot a few of them and word will get out...
I worked for a LS in Northern Va,that put those kind of markings all over his equipment. It didn't help.He was robbed of his equipment and vehicle by gunpount.
I think it would make the equipment look more valuable, health concerns are not too high of a deterrent to the meth user.
One of those hunting cameras might be handy, especially if there was a set up that would let you remote in with your phone if you loose your base. Imagine you have issues with phone coverage out there in the hinterlands, which would put a damper on my idea.
Even though a camera would be nice to see a pic of the thief, I doubt you would recognize them and odds you won't see the vehicle or license plate. What is needed is a beacon/gps device so you can be tracked. Not just in the box either, one on the actual unit that can be remotely activated. I believe Trimble has something.

It is getting worse.
If Total Stations use phone cards for communication, Can't we get an app similar to "find my Droid"?

I seriously doubt they know how to read.
To tie into the earlier idea on shocking users under canopy. ...
You have a 12 volt car battery right there. Use it...
I had my external battery stolen from underneath my base station one time. Left everything else I guess the guy needed an old used battery. Office couldn't believe it when I told them the battery was stolen and everything else was still there
