Greetings from the U.P. and the shores of Lake Superior. I have enjoyed reading and learning from posts here for a while, but finally decided to sign up. I do mostly rural boundary surveys and corner retracement.
A nice North wind blowing off the great refrigerator (Superior) bringing us some low 70's and high 60's for temps (and smoke from the fires up North.) I look forward to sharing ideas about the best ways to deal with heavy tree canopy, spotty cell coverage, and landowners who think the intersection of two faded blue paint lines constitutes a corner.
Do you use GPS-only or multi-constellation? I see no GNSS solution to dense canopy. Years ago there were some hydraulic towers used in Scandinavia. Obviously too expensive and complex for everyday users.
Spent some time in Marquette during August and enjoyed the cool weather. Today here in Las Vegas, NV they are expecting to meet or exceed the all-time high of 117F. Yuck.

I once lived in Michigan but was like four million miles from the west end of the UP. Berrien County. 35 miles from Notre Dame. My apartment was about a half mile from Lake Michigan. Learned that snow can come down in October and not melt until May, though, when you are in the lake effect area.

Welcome! My wife and I have vacationed every summer in Michigan since we meet in 2002. Anywhere from New Buffalo to Glen Arbor, all along Lake Michigan. This year was a week in South Haven over the 4th. Traverse City is about as far north as we've gotten though. I'd like to cross into the UP sometime.
Thanks for the welcome. I am feeling sympathy for all you guys in the South. It was 54 degrees and foggy here this morning. Come on up for a break from the heat and cool your feet in the Big Lake.

Spent a week on isle royal (sp) if that counts. Lake was colder than the ocean. Best part was watching a half dozen black bears pick through the dump on the mainland where the ferry was.

A woman who grew up about a quarter mile down the road from me has lived for a few decades on the north side of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Her tract is on the shore. I can only imagine watching that storm surge and being ready to go anywhere else UPHILL from there. Very little of Minnesota left to the northeast of her. Lutsen or Grand Marais, I think.

My first trip to the UP was on a ferry with my family many years ago. Then came Big Mac and we could drive.
The years went by and after roaming all over, retired and have since made many trips up there enjoying the beauty. Oh, and don't get me started on the pasties!
Last year was one of the best for color in my memory.

Beautiful country but the hemlocks and hardwoods make GPS a challenge and they suck up all the uhf radio.
