Hi! I'm based on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, and do field work all over BC.

I work for a company that does civil engineering, mainly for forestry and other resource industries. I went back to school in my late 20's and had an awesome time getting my Civil Engineering Technology diploma. I have about 6 years of experience now, and the more I learn.... the more questions I have.

We use total stations, robotic total stations, RTK gear, and we have a simple depth sounder for bathymetry. Sometimes we're right in town, but usually we're hiking through the remote woods. We do site surveys, design work, construction supervision/layout, and inspections. It's the perfect mix.

As the company grows, I've taken on a role where I help maintain and write SOPs for the survey gear, train new hires in surveying, and troubleshoot anything related to geomatics. You can imagine that I was pleased to find this site 🙂

Hope you're all having a great day!

IO

Sounds like BCIT. Welcome from a fellow C&S grad, 1984.

@kevin-hines Thanks Kevin. I had a co-worker come back from a remote mountain-top job recently, and the wind was so harsh he had to drill anchors into the bedrock and use tie-wire to snug the tripod down. Seemed like a good northern surveyor story.

Thanks @dougie and @norman-oklahoma too! I went to Camosun College, but I think its similar to BCIT in that it's very hands-on.
