Looking to purchase a new base/rover setup this year and write off the expense.
We have used Topcon/Sokkia for the last 30 years and currently have Sokkia GRX2. We own Topcon software from the days when you purchased it. Next year we have a few jobs scheduled in areas with more tree coverage and would like to upgrade to better equipment. I just recieved an offer on the BRX7, but never worked with their software. I see the Sokkia GRX3 is a years old design. Any rumors of a sale or upgrade from Topcon/Sokkia soon? Any Topcon folks that switched to Carlson have advice? Perhaps we will wait and try a few rentals next year. Open to advice. Den
The BRX7s work great in the woods. I have had some trouble if the canopy gets really thick, but will often get a fix even there after a couple minutes. Highly recommend them, having used several other brands over the years.
I'm not a Topcon fan. Trimble or Leica for me. And there isn't a whole lot of price difference, long run. When I was shopping 2 years ago the dealership selling the Carlson was also selling Geomax, which is a Leica rebrand. That alone would tip me to the Carlson, if Carlson and Topcon where my only choices. Even though, I must admit, that the dealer support on the Topcon is excellent locally.
For the record, I bought Leica GS18's with CS20's and recently added a TS16 to the stable. I'm very happy with those choices.
I've only heard good things from folks I trust who use a BRX7. Carlson is the most intuitive software I've used as compared to Topcon and Trimble. I use an R12i and have no complaints (because I didn't pay for it) in heavy canopy in North and South Carolina. If I worked solo, I'd likely purchase a Javad as I've demoed them and appreciate the ability to customize it and get a good look under the hood.
Yeah solo the javad can be set up to do some neat stuff. Where I am now all Trimble. Ran a R10 base with R12i rover today. Setting some control in between the worst metal buildings and high-power lines. I had set the primary control surrounding the site and decided to take a chance 8 points set in not friendly environments. Well lets say that the most error after setting up the S5 taking BS and checking to 3rd points we had .02 ft hz .025 ft vertical. I was expecting a lot more flop. Was willing to live with a tenth for what we were doing between buildings but it was way tighter than that. Going back tomorrow to finish the job and tie down all the control even the 2nd sary in between the buildings again. It has amazed me the results it can get and checking with conventional relatively as good as it does.
Hemisphere S631 is the same as the Carlson BRX 7 Contact Benchmark-equipment in Alberta Canada.
Tell them "California Dave" sent you. They pair it with a Mesa 3 rugged tablet and field genius software. which is very comprehensive. Speak with Rene' He knows quite a bit about surveying.
Thanks for the thoughts. Being an elderly gentleman I don't look foreward to changing/learning new software. Being a thrifty person I do not like the idea of purchasing a base/rover that was their new model over three years ago, just concerned that they, Topcon/Sokkia, come out with a new model as soon as my check clears. We were an early Javad Triumph user, a bit too early. We probably will not try again. From reading this site over the years I had seen a lot of satisfied BRX7 users reporting good results. I do see quite a lot of satisfied Trimble customers, but we will not be switching to a Trimble setup due to cost. Back to the original questions. Any rumors of sales or new models from Topcon/Sokkia? For those that changed from Topcon/Sokkia to Carlson, How did it go? Den
The BRX7 is good and the interface is intuitive. Get shots where you never thought you could if you haven't bought new gear in a while. Trimble is better but expensive.
Javad in my opinion is the best if you want to really know what's going on with each shot. Lots of data for you to decide if you believe or not. Javad operates differently from other manufacturers and as such, there is a learning curve but its a heck of a system. It does its own post processing with the push of a button (including immediate field post processing) that is very simple. Pricing is great.
I purchased a Base/rover set up from Mark Silver from Igage out of Salt Lake City in 2018 or so. This was before Carlson booted support for his hardware. I've had very minor issues with my IG8's, and when I did Mark provides excellent (almost unheard of) support. I think they might be a couple models past the IG8's at this point but I won't have a problem going back to him when mine become obsolete!
I think Javad is probably the best solo rural survey system. If you are doing mostly boundary surveys and have to deal with canopy and terrain. The way it works is ideal for that set up. I don’t know if i would want to do a bunch of topo mapping or staking but it is a nice set up. For sure. And with the way the onboard processing is you can pretty much eliminate back at the office qa/qc. But the person using it needs to understand the system and gnss to do it that way.
Thanks again for the replys. We have worked with the Javad Triumph years ago, and will not be going that direction. I have purchased from Mark Silver, and spent quite a lot of time reading the information he has provided over the years. Thank you Mark for all you have done to educate folks like me. Den
