Hello,
as the title suggests: has anyone had problems with the backup battery on the Leica GS14? And, more importantly, how did you fix it?… If anyone has managed to fix it… (…I have a bad feeling about this…).
Thanks
I'm not familiar with a "back-up battery" on the GS-14. But if your batteries are losing their oomph I recommend surveybattery.com (aka Dias & Dias Electronics) as a good place to get them recelled. Very well done and far cheaper than new ones.
I couldn't find mention of any power source/battery other than those used for normal operation in this manual. Perhaps you'll find something I didn't.
I've had mine go bad too many times... The first time I took it to Leica and it was $700 to replace the battery. 18 months later, I had to have the motherboard replaced, at $2,600. 24 months later, the backup battery was dead again. This time I tried replacing it myself; it's a battery you have to solder onto the board. It, uh, did not go well. I bought a replacement GS14 from Geomatics360 for $1,500. I was told to keep a charged GEB212 in it. I also make sure it's powered up at least once a month. So far so good.
Thanks everyone for the replies.
As EdWidy understood, the problem isn't with the GS14's power battery, but with a small battery (I assumed it was soldered onto the board) that stores various GPS data (such as almanacs, etc.).
As I imagined, the problem is simple, but fixing it is expensive, and there could likely be further problems in the future.
I'll evaluate what Leica Support tells me and decide what to do...
I'll add that I'm even more upset because I'm arranging to ship the GPS but also, at the same time, the BLK360, which is giving me problems. I'm quite demoralized...
Anyway... good luck everyone.
