I have used the recent Novatel/Hemisphere boards in various receivers so am familiar with how they perform.  While I realise the spec sheets provided are usually only for 1 epoch observations at 1 standard deviation (RMS) vs the 2 standard deviations (95%) or even 3 standard deviations (99%) surveyors are more interested in it interests me that some manufacturers are brave enough to show a tighter precision specification than the industry norm as per Topcon Hiper XR below:

In practice for ~20 epoch observations with pole spun 180° and averaged, then repeated 20min+ later my repeatability in open sky and urban RTK radio baselines (<2km) is ~5mm HZ and ~10mm V.  Topcon are claiming that with a single epoch (admittedly you need to double the RMS value to get close to the 95% confidence I'd want to be working to).

Why is it that Trimble, Leica, CHC etc. are not updating their spec sheets to match Topcon, I fail to believe it is because their boat goes faster.

Oh my. How can 1 epoch even be quantified. I must have missed that day in class. As someone who has not only surveyed both in the geodetic realm and Land Surveying realm. I also have been involved with orbits. So user range error. This seems like a bad marketing campaign to me.

Topcon are claiming that with a single epoch

I missed the part where they are claiming that precision with a single epoch. I didn't see where the number of epochs where mentioned. I'm speculating they get those results with more epochs than the typical user would care to collect for RTK.

@lurker

Fair point, that spec sheet does not explicitly mention a single epoch.  Neither do Trimble R980 or Leica GS18 datasheets but thought the ISO testing standard they reference is for an epoch. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ENWCF81DgR8 has more specifics on that anyway.

The point remains that like 0-100 times for vehicles people will buy the one that has the lowest time or in our case the best precision spec. If Topcon claim lower numbers and can prove it then that will improve their market share.
