So I run a very small "one man" shop in eastern NC.   Oftentimes the canopy is T-H-I-C-K, especially while collecting flagged wetlands.   I, essentially, have to break out the TS because the R8 just doesn't handle any kind of tree cover that well.    The obvious problem with shooting in wetlands with a TS is that it's slow, and there are always tree trunks, or thickets in the line of sight.    I understand that the JAVAD Triumph-VS GNSS Receiver isn't the latest and greatest, but lets face it, neither is the R8.  I purchase all equipment in cash and have the opportunity to purchase the Triumph-VS.
Now for my question:
Is this an upgrade that will allow me to shoot in those pesky wetlands delineations, or should I pass?
A follow up question would be:  What's a good price for the JAVAD Triumph-VS?

Thanks for your time.

Can't speak to the Javad.
But Trimble's R10-2 (and onward) are a whole generation ahead of the R8.
One of the places where that shows is under-canopy performance.
If you want to stick with Trimble, get one of those for a good price and I don't think you will disappointed

@jimcox Having used both, the R10-2 is light years ahead of the R-8 working under canopy. I'd occasionally get bad initializations with the R8 and positions off by tens of feet. Very rare with R10, but sometimes under the very worst of conditions even the R10 will struggle. Can't ditch the TS just yet.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

Hi everyone.

I've not looked through a total station in years.

The R8-3 is a 2-constellation receiver (GPS + GLO), while the Triumph-VS is multi-constellation (GPS, GLO, GAL, QZSS, BDO, SBAS).  I have no experience with the VS, but based on constellation capability alone it should run circles around the R8.
