I got some pics of a similar tree, on a recent survey. I'll post them later, when I download the camera.
I seem to think there are many things we see, but don't realize. And that this is one of them.

There are quite a few of these trees along the Cherokee Boundary Line that runs across Cleburne County, Arkansas.
If I recall this line was surveyed before 1820 and is a long curved line due to running with a compass.
Our old buddy Christie Otching and her hubby Earl are active in a couple of organizations dealing with locating and documenting marker trees around the country.

I checked not long ago and Christie let her Michigan license lapse in 2010. She obtained her CFedS in 2007.
I guess she moved on to greater things than land surveying. I wish them well.
