Well I hunkered down and went through the CFedS program and just received notide that I passed the exam and am now a Certified Federal Surveyor!!

It might seem odd for a dye in wool Colonial type like me to go through this program but I really feel that there are benefits to acquistion of knowledge, and I have to say, that was one heck of a well run program!!!

I ate, drank and slept PLSS since about Feb. I have read the manual, the 3000 pages of material and about 200 hours (it seemed) of video lessons.... I learned about indian country surveying as well as how to subdivide sections...

I am excited that I can still learn about surveying successfully!!

Thanks Roger Green for all your help and the CFedS program in general. I feel my horizons opening up!!

Foggy,

Welcome to the group.

I was among the "Beta" group. I agree with you about the knowlege one can still learn, even after they might think they 'know it all.'

I haven't USED any of the information I received, but in general, I somehow feel better or more comfortable about what I DO know.

'Tis only right you should thank those folk for teaching you. They did one bang up job as far as I was concerned.

Robert William

Youd be money ahead if old Donald there surveyed in your state. He's more than welcome in Texas.

I used to think the wind was out of the south during the summer in Texas because Oklahoma sucked, but evidently, it's just you.

Well Done

The hunger for more knowledge is a very worthy trait, no matter your age or background.

CFedS>Thanks everyone

So Oklahoma here I come! I heard that challenge! lol, nah, I'm not re-locating. Not yet anyway!! I may explore consultation but my primary motivation was the Indian Lands and Federal lands in MA. We do have Indian Nations and they are exploring expansion into revenue producing ventures, read "casinos", so possibly there might be some work there, And the National Seashore park on Cape Cod is huge (for around here), so possibly some projects there, and then there is ALWAYS Wisconsin! or my Fave, Michigan...

Texas, now there is a horse of a different color. I've always said there is Colonial Surveying, PLSS surveying and then Texas... After I took the CFedS exam on June 3 I decided to read Michnears "Texas" and long and typical Michnear read, all 1000 pages of it. It was a nice break from the studying that I had been doing for months. I feel like i learned a little something about Texas history and it sure made Texas sound like a beautiful diverse state, but not one I'd want to survey !! I'll visit for sure some day, but not to work!!!

I enjoyed the CFedS course, and it's great to know that even though I've passed and am now certified that if I do put my certification to work I have the CFedS people behind me to assist with any problems. At least they will be there to point me in the right direction!! It's like having built in survey "support"!

Congratulations! I hope you found it valuable, even though you are working in the Colonial system.

CFedS>Northern

I did learn a lot, and we do have Tribes and federal lands in MA, just not sections. The national seashore is a huge federal park, so maybe there is some work there for me...

Maybe being the only CFedS in MA will be a benefit.

congrats,

come on out to the left coast and have some real fun.

Retrace Baker the Faker and Slick Willy Magee among others, who in the 1870-1880's helped put the "con" in contractor while performing (or not) their duties as deputy GLO surveyors under contract with the US.

Retracing original PLSS surveys is so much more fun when you add elements of mystery and mischief into the fray.
