I've seen a lot of speculation about the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 on other sites, none with the intellectual firepower of this site, but I haven't seen any discussion here at all, unless I've missed it. I find the incident both frightening and fascinating, and I would very much like to hear the opinions of our own group regarding this mystery. Conspiracy theories welcomed.

This isn't remotely political, is it?

One thing seems to be for sure. That is for all the satellites and such that seem to be documenting every second of every day of our life, there must have been none pointed in the right directions that day. That by itself is downright amazing.

I find it hard to believe that someone didn't have a "weather" satellite pointed down around there, snapping away.

I mean, you can watch the weather channel and watch the latest water vapor (infra-red) imagery every morning all over the globe. If the triple 7 augured into the drink, they'll find some trash or an oil slick eventually.

I'm wondering if maybe it landed on Dr. No's remote island laboratory somewhere. Now it's covered up with banana leaves.

I'm sure Jesse Ventura is working on the documentary even as we speak.

I find it hard to believe that all commercial jets don't have a GPS tracking system that uploads the coordinates via satellite .... it just seems insane that a cheap technology that could fit into something smaller than a cell phone isn't on an highly advanced passenger jet.

from what I've heard..

..the plane did have tracking. That along with the transponder was manually turned off. They apparently are working on pings that the Rolls Royce engines have installed on them for transfer of service maintenance data. Although Malaysia Air didn't pay for the Rolls Royce service, the engines were still pinging the satellites.

Just open up Google Earth and you will realize that the oceans are very very very very. very vast.
The jet is smaller than a needle in a grassy field.

I will second that one. In this day and age, we don't have a satellite tracking system (that the pilots can't turn off) for airlines is beyond me. They are still relying on World War II era radar tracking which doesn't exist everywhere.

I have no logical personal opinion about this, but it has caught my attention for sure.

So many theories and talking heads with every news station.

This might take years to solve.

The friends and family of these passenger's are in our prayers.

The possibility that the plane was commandeered and that it landed safely, and all on board are alive, and now the plane is being filled with weapons of mass destruction, and that the passengers will be used as human shields is a real possibility.

Flight 370 - primer on satellite pings

Maybe its finally time to install LoJack on commercial aircraft (I'm surprised they didn't have it already).

There is a system called ADS-B that is required now in many countries and required on US planes by 2020. It uses the same frequency as transponders, and sends out position reports. Most US commercial airplanes do not have it yet. I have a Garmin GDL-39 that I use when flying, it connects to my tablet and shows traffic in the area (that is broadcasting ADS-B out) as well as weather that it gets from the ADS-B system. I can't wait for the day when all planes in the US have to have it, that will make air travel much safer.

I purchased (for about $200) a small box with an antenna that can receive and decode these ADS-B broadcasts. There is a web site that tracks this info...www.flightradar24.com. If you look at the US, the ADS-B equipped planes are yellow, orange symbols are planes without ADS-B. Those non ADS-B planes are tracked by standard radar, and are delayed 5 minutes (stupid FAA rule). So, you can see in real time the ADS-B planes and 5 minutes delayed the non ADS-B planes. If you look at Europe, all planes have ADS-B (required). But, the ADS-B is line of sight, so a receiver might cover 100 to 200 km around the antenna. Out over the ocean, there are no antennas on the ground, so I believe the tracks are estimated based on the flight plan. And, if there is not an ADS-B receiver in range, it cannot be tracked.

Here is a document about radar spotting.

I would imagine there is or will be a way to relay ADS-B position data over satellite links or HF radio (shortwave).

Lots of sea and air traffic in all the areas of interest, plus the eyes in the sky, something is being covered up. The whys, wheres and who's, I have no clue but don't believe anything about any official statements made so far, other than the aircraft did not arrive where and when it was intended.

I don't think the full story will come out until well after this is over. One avionics and communications expert mentioned the "pings" were like a cell phone trying to find a cell tower. Same expert said the satellites, like the cell towers, identify the sender of the ping and the data transmission and timing can support triangulation (trilateration) to locate the ping source.

After that one comment not one mention of this has been made. Wonder if that person was quietly told to shut up? Everyone else has said the information indicates one of two very general paths. One path northwest and the other southwest from the last location the news media has reported. Try thinking of this as GPS in reverse and the original comment makes more sense than the latter one.

Bob, I have been following flight 370 disappearance with interest and suspect that you are heading towards the intent..

First fact after last communication, when supposed to be entering Vietnam air space plane suddenly ascended to 45,000 feet.Cockpit being isolated. At that altitude if cabin only decompressed and O2 in drop downs are turned off, then passenger and cabin crew would quickly suffer hypoxia and all expire with in moments.

So that one simple action takes care of all potential cabin resistance and chance to communicate externally.

Left with a rogue crew, next was for cockpit crew to take evasive action to become an occasional radar blip as an un plotted , now deliberately lost aircraft. As Vietnam would not raise concerns, as that changing of frequency to introduce entry radio was obviously never made. Remember airlines vary entry flight path, time and location due to weather or delayed departure.

This meant the stolen plane had hours to fly with a full load of fuel to a predetermined remote airstrip and be cleaned out of passengers and hidden. Plane to be then later re badged in another airline company name and made ready with a load of dirty radioactive bombs.

When ready fly to another secret location refuel and be ready to intercept and replace another commercial flight on way to a US major airport, where the rogue suicide crew will rapidly ascend with a plane load of innocent unsuspecting passengers ( just as happened on flight 370 passengers ) before later dropping out of the sky into the ocean with the lost flight 370 plane substituted to fly on to an unsuspecting destination to unexpectedly detonate their radioactive payload over say LAX to immediately decommission a major airport, billions of dollars of planes and portions of a major city .

As for time frame these people do not think logically. Time is not an issue as terror and fear of flying can also be used to cripple world airline companies. America must understand that US involvement in the middle east and Muslim countries like Malaysia has many who would be willing to participate on bombing your US homeland.

The other Q that must be asked is, are the US secret security service deliberately withholding information or are their security systems not at the level that every one is led to believe?

Very scarey! Please do not say this could never possibly happen as I live between both sides and can see that this is extremely plausible chilling scenario.
