The Mrs. has a big (30) bday coming up and would like an ereader. Our laptop also just bit the dust and she's thinking of getting a MAC. With that in mind, what of the above choices would you recommend? I know the IPAD is more than an ereader, but with the kids, and other things you can do on it seems like the better choice. Just looking for additional thoughts. Thanks.

Nook Color 2 is supposed to come out Nov. 7, you may want to wait.
Do a search on the board about "Rooting" a nook color. you can basically turn it into an inexpensive android tablet at about 1/2 of the cost of an ipad.
i have a nook color that is rooted, i use it for email, internet, reading, message boards, etc.

I am hooked on my nook Color. When I got my first nook, why back when they first came out I was impressed, especially compared to the kindle. The nook color has surpassed even that!

I am not an Apple user so I have no opinion except that I will be re-rooting my nook color before I go away in Dec. But even 'as-is' it's an adequate web portal...

The iPad screen is much bigger making it much easier to read.

They're a lot more things that can be done with the iPad then can be done with other e-readers.

I use mine constantly for so many different projects.

It is more expensive than the other e-readers. However I've never had a problem with the Wi-Fi only smallest version . We have Wi-Fi at home and at the office and I find it on the road all the time.

Having been an Apple reviled for many years I'm rather surprised that I'm now such a proponent!

I love my iPad for many reasons. The apps available are too numerous and fantastic to go into here. I actually got mine originally because I wanted an e-reader with some extra capability. I have Kindle and Nook apps on the iPad, but to be honest, I really think it's too heavy for a reader, especially lying in bed. Of course, when my wife and I were 30 years old lying in bed and reading didn't occur as frequently as it does now:-)

I have a regular Nook Reader. If I were to get a new reader, I would go for one of the color models. The Nook Color reader is SUPER nice.
Kindle has a new color reader coming out called "The Fire". The initial price is very low!! That would be the one I would go with.
The screen on the Nook readers and the Kindles is very easy on the eyes and I've had no problems with the screen size.
To me, the iPad is too much for my tase in just an ereader, and that is all I wanted when I got my first one. If I want more, I would go to a laptop. The intermediate size just does not appeal to me.

The only issue that I have with my Kindle is we lost power last night so I went to read and found the screen hard to see in the darkness, looked for a way to change contrast and all I could find in the users guide was for reading pdf's, so I still needed a ligth to read by. I haven't had this for very long, so that the only thing I've seen so far.

My wife and I both got Nook Colors for Christmas last year and we both really like them. Easy to use and read, the battery last a fairly good amount of time and as was stated they can be rooted to turn them into a fairly inexpensive tablet.

Ipads are great but not for everyone. Be aware of Apple's "feed the sheep" business approach and don't become frustrated with the device if you don't like things that are highly proprietary. I personally like the ipad but despise the way Apple tries to control the consumer and will wait for a good alternative.

The Kindle Fire looks attractive.

I bought a refurbished Nook Color from Barnes & Noble last week for $149.00. It comes with a 1-year guarantee. Last night I installed CM7 and Google Apps, thus turning it into an Android tablet, complete with access to Android Market with its tons of apps (including a Nook app). Although the process of getting there is a bit techy, it went without a hitch.

The neat thing is you don't have to mess with the Nook's internal RAM -- you can put it all on a microSD card, because the machine looks for an SD card first when booting. That means you can go back to a completely stock Nook Color just by shutting down, removing the SD card, and powering on again. Rooting it this way doesn't affect the warranty.

I'm new to mobile tablet computing, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money getting my feet wet. At $149.00, the Nook Color offers a lot of bang for the buck.

I have to say, I'm becoming just a little perturbed by the lack of Honeycomb on the Nook Color. I bought mine with the idea that eventually I'd be able to put Honeycomb on it. Sadly, Google has not yet fully released Honeycomb and thus, it cannot be used on the Nook Color. Well, okay, it can, but some people have hacked away at it by pulling Honeycomb off of other tablets that have it by default, but it loses a lot of functionality in the process.

I shouldn't be perturbed because it is an awesome little device with an awesome little price. But I've been tempted to sell it recently since I use it less than I used to and because of the whole Honeycomb scenario.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great device, but you can't put an actual tablet OS on it as of yet.

good one.
another point is that I think the Kindle Fire is pretty "locked down" in the sense that they make you use Amazon's cloud storage and you only have access to a limited number of apps on the Amazon appstore. Not only that, there's no SD card slot for expanding onboard storage, and the bootloader will most likely be locked down as well, so no loading custom ROMS or "rooting".
If the Nook 2 comes out with an SD card slot that you can boot from, thats going to be the one. The Nook Color 1 is a very open device, you load basically any custom android rom you want, and still go back to the stock rom and UI like it was never touched. There are quirks here and there, but again, its a $150 device that you're adding the functionality of a $600 device to.
If you're at all techy, go for the nook and have fun with it. If you want a plug and play device, go for an ipad or kindle, or nook and don't root it. Its still very funtional as an ereader and limited internet device untouched.

PSUS01

Well, I hope these responses answered your question.:-|
Actually, I'm following all the recent "pad' posts pretty carefully myself. I know I'll have to get some kind of reader in the very near future.

And this discussion got me to google "Honeycomb"...

I'm even more confused than before...lol. But basically it sounds like if it's only a reader either Kindle or Nook with Nook winning. And if more than that root a Nook or pony up and buy the IPAD. With the kids getting older (1 & 3) maybe the Ipad is a better option for educational apps, and games to keep them entertained.

oh yeah, one other benefit with the nook old style or color version, is that you can read to your hearts content in the Store (for free, any ebook in the library!) and on Fridays they give out free book downloads. there are also some other options when you synch in the store but they are of the moment. I don't get there often but when i have gone there have been free cookies and other items that pop up on your screen when you're in the store.
Also, nook can download library books and the kindle can't, or couldn't previously..maybe now they can.

I have a Kindle and I love it. I may buy an iPad but will rarely use it as a reader.

I'm thinking about getting one. Which version do you have?
