96
I'm of the opinion that the real intelligence test is how much time one spends on social media/interweb intelligence tests 😉

Oh, yer just pissed off because you can't figger it out. 😉
The "+" side of me says "40". Of course, if I'm a product of my plus side, I'd also have to say "96" (but to me, 40 would have been the most correct relationship).
On a side-note... I was rocking out to Jimmy Buffett (with two t's) Saturday night on Wrigley Field by the traditional short-stop position (opening act was Huey Lewis and the News). What a show! 😎
The answer is 17 because 2 + 5 is not 12, and 3 + 6 is not 21. No wonder so many kids are failing math.
96
96 is the ladder frame answer.
40 is more of a unibody style.

A Freudian approach to justify repeatedly getting the wrong answer.
96 makes sense in one way. Don't understand 40, though. Tried oddball stuff like time, but that doesn't work. Tried a different base instead of 10, but that doesn't work. Guess I'm one of the 999.

to get to 40 you have to integrate the whole thing, hence my comment above. it goes slightly beyond simple pattern recognition and repetition.
x+y= x(y)+x. How does 40 figure in there?

To get 40 you are supposed to add the previous answer. 8+11+21= 40. I have heard also they just say 1 out of 1000, or only 1% of the population can get this correct, they are just made up stats to make the quiz taker to feel smart and special. We all know the answer is 19.
I didn't see 40 at first glance; 96 was pretty obvious.

I'm the opposite, got 40 right away, then saw 96 when it was mentioned. Maybe a left-handed thing.

What if you do a running total adding the sum of each previous line and interpolate the missing equations in the sequence? Freaky man
1+4=5
5+2+5=12
12+3+6=21
21+4+7=32
32+5+8=45
45+6+9=60
60+7+10=77
77+8+11=96
OK y'all here ya go.
SOLUTION 1
The makers explain that most people will begin by adding 1 + 4 to reach the answer 5.
Then they'll add 2 + 5 to the sum of 5 to get an answer of 12.
The majority of users will use the same process in the next line, adding 3 + 6 to get 9, then add nine to the sum in the equation above (12) to reach the figure 21.
In the last stage, they will add 8 + 11 to get 19, before adding it to the sum of the previous line (21) to get 40.
While makers say that 40 is a widely accepted and correct answer, there's another answer - and only a select few will reach it.
SOLUTION 2
While makers say that, of course, 1 + 4 = 5, intelligent people will get the answer by adding 1 to 4 x 1.
Using that formula, they'll add 2 to 2 x 5 to get 12.
They'll then add 3 to 6 x 3 to get 21.
And to reach the final and alternate answer, they'll add 8 to 11 x 8 to get 96.

BTW one in one thousand is one-tenth of one percent, not one percent.
