I own several Remington 700's in various calibers all of which I like very much. My favorite is a Model 700 CDL SF Special Addition in 30.06. It has a walnut stock with the gun oil finish, stainless fluted barrel, and the lightest, smoothest trigger I've found on a modern factory rifle. For liability reasons most manufacturers started using heavy trigger pulls (6-10 lbs. on the rifles I've tested). This makes the weapon safer in inexperienced or careless hands, but hurts accuracy. This rifle out of the box had a trigger pull of about 4.5 lbs and was smooth like greased glass. I don't remember what I paid in 2007, but Bass Pro lists it for a little less than a grand these days.

Marlin .22 lever action.

Funnist gun I’ve ever shot. My dad’s old gun. Heavy barrel that you can drop down on a bead and hold steady. We burned up beau coup boxes of long rifles with the old Marlin.

It might stretch your budget, I'm wanting a black rifle for coyotes.

MSR on the DPMS AP4 is $904. Shopping around might find one in your range.

I've owned several through the years, more of a fisherman than hunter now. My favorites still in the cabinet are a Winchester 94 in 30-30 cal., Remington 141 gamemaster in 35 cal. and Winchester model 50 in 20 ga.

Depends on the purpose. For $700 you should be able to come close to getting both.

Assuming this is for hunting:
For the rifle I would go the Marlin XL7 in 30.06 or the XS7 in .308. $450 w/ scope.
For the shotgun it is hard to beat a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 both in 12 gauge. $300.

Assuming for home protection:
Rifle - Century WASR 10 AK 47 - $450
Shotgun - Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 again both in 20 gauge for home use.

I have a Marlin XS7 in .243 thats my main deer gun & an older Marlin .30-30 levergun I use sometimes.

But my favorite gun of choice would probably be a Bushmaster AR-15 wi/interchangable upper recievers so I could switch betweeen .223 & .308

A sweet little 410 over and under like my grandpa gave me when I was a little boy. I can't even remember the make, but I remember killing lots of little critters and a ton of cans.

Zastava Mauser 98 in .375 H&H, iron sights. Imported by USSG. $550.
Same thing was rebadged for a while as a Remington 798 with a nice laminated stock but those run more if you can find one.

Winchester Model 270 Deluxe .22 pump or a Winchester Model 275 Deluxe .22 mag pump.

Not the regular model, the Deluxe model, which had much nicer wood and a gold plated trigger.

An early 60's model in good condition.

I have a model 270 that I love to shoot, under 200' feet, with open sights, on a beer can it is deadly.

It is tube fed and holds 17 rounds, a real hoot to shoot and easy on the wallet.

Ruger M-77 International in .308. Looks good, shoots good. (I also agree about the WASR10 Ak-47. Not only for home defense, but I have taken several deer with mine. I have one of the low capacity versions, so a 5 round mag for hunting is no problem. Ammo is cheap, it's just fun to shoot and is easy to clean and maintain. You cannot beat it for the price.)

I don't hunt but I have one of these, sans pistol grip. It's cheap, easy to shoot and clean. Great gun for the price!

Get one of these babies and you'll never miss Plus you can save $25 if you order today.

But I did like my Marlin 30-30 for MI white tail, until somebody stole it. My Rem Wingmaster seems to do ok, except for occasional operator error in aiming it and just scaring the birds.

My gun of choice is my Henry Arms Sweet 16 Double Barrel circa 1890's.

The Marlin 30-30 is the best all round game gun around here with most shots below 100yrds and use 150gr-180gr brush load. Optional 124gr hollow point will reach out there far enough for most.

Very fond of the Remington 1100 auto 12ga with 3in mag barrel. Will expel alot of lead in a short time, just point, pull the trigger and hold on.

well I havn't used my marlin .30-30 much so far (took it out once last yr) but I'm sure it will do the job if I get a nice buck in its crosshairs. Where I deer hunt my shots are seldom over 50 yds.

Mine is a Marlin 30-30 with iron sites. Just bought my oldest a Ruger Scout, short barreled .308 bolt action. Looks pretty nice.

But I do like the simplicity of H&R shotgun action rifles and shotguns. I have a 30-06 and a twelve and twenty gauge. KISS.

i agree, single shots are fun to play with. while I've never owned or shot an H&R rifle, I do have an older 16 ga winchester single barrel that's fun to shoot. only problem is trying to find shells for it 😐 Does anyone here reload? Just curious.

It all depends on what I am shooting at. If I am going after empty beer cans, it is a toss up between my Remmington 510 Target Master, or the Winchester Model 63 that was my Grandfater's. But, I am mulling over the purchase of a gun for Wild Hog hunting. The caliber and action changes often. Some times, I think I want a Lever action 45-70, and other times, I think it should be a bolt action .308 or 30-06, and at other times I think it should be a Ruger Ranch Rifle in 6.8 Secial.🙂

Marlin Model 336 is a great multipurpose rifle. The cartridges ejecting from the side allow you to easily mount a scope. You can usually find one with a scope around here for less than $400.
