For those of you who have small offices and do your own network, computer work, what are you using for networking?
Are you using just what is provided by your internet provider with maybe a swith and a NAS drive for storage. Or, a more complex set up with your own router, switches , servers, etc.
I am considering moving from my ISP provided router at home and building a Unifi based system from Ubiquiti. It can be a daunting task and was curious.
Thanks
UDM pro. And I have a 4 bay NAS for backups. The UDM pro lets me have multiple wireless access points in three different structures, with a guest network, all controlled from the UDM pro. When I built my house I wired every room with at least 1 RJ45 (most have two) and ceiling mount access points.
we have a netgear poe switch, synology nas, Leica GR30 rtn broadcasting rt corrections, printer, scanner, poe ip phones, poe cameras, desktop workstation and notebooks all behind a sonicwall tz380 appliance.
I did find out that my ISP router/wifi combo delivers wifi power at a full 1watt while none of the unifi products do. They are more of the mind that lower transmit power and more acess points to control the overall signal reach is better.
I don't have full control over the router either, and documentation is sparse since the product is geared toward an ISP install and not Diy.
The unfi is sorta the Apple of networking.
@john-hamilton the UDM pro is Unifi correct? How do you like the interface and overall operation of the "system"?
@gary_g It is ubiquiti. And so are my access points (4 in my house and 2 in another building). The UDM pro will adjust the transmit power so that they don't interfere.
I'll second John on the UDM pro. @garyg, I'm a little confused on your statement of control over the router. I'm going to assume you are referring to the ISP provided hardware since the UDM can be a little intimidating to manage. Not impossible but not simply plug and play.
As an added bonus, it can also control security cameras without sharing your data to Meta or Google.
@john-putnam Correct, My ISP provided Router?wifi COmbo has a lot of funcionality but there are things I cannot do. I actually had to call them to login on the backend and change a setting for me.
Intimidation is another issue, I know enough to look good but still be dangerous 😉
Thanks for the input !
