I don't if you would call this Simple but thirteen years ago when I was getting ready to buy the practice. I used Business Plan Pro from PaloAlto Software. It let me run income and exspense numbers and I got instant numbers of making money or not. That allowed me to look at my expenses and to value my services properly. In addition the software's web site had boiler plate you could change for your situation for many businesses including engineering and surveying.
