Of course surveyors work for nothing !
Just like all other professions.

Thats interesting to think that somebody has extra time...like its a hobby
"...people aren't as interested these days in an unpaid position."
Enough said.
The county surveyor in Kentucky really doesn't have the power to do anything.
I have read on this board about the great work that is done in some other states by the County Surveyor. For example, recovering, referencing, and filing records on the old section corners.
To me, those positions sound like an ideal government funded position. The benefit to the public is tangible to me.
Unfortunately, the County Surveyor position in Kentucky is not set-up that way. It is up to the local government as to if the position will be supported (not just financially) in any way. Unfortunately many counties look at it as just a position that has to be filled or it will result in additional ballot work for the County Clerk.
I believe that one of the Jackson Purchase Chapter of KAPS members, William Paris, will be presenting a course at the February KAPS conference covering the position of County Surveyor in Kentucky.
In my part of Florida, the county surveyor is not elected. He (or she) is hired to head the county surveying department. He has a few other PSMs working under him, and a few crews, and they do plat reviews, PLSS recovery, surveying of county land/projects, road construction work on county roads, etc. They also keep a ton of records and make them available to the private surveyors. It's a very worthy position and worthy of a paycheck.
I was elected county surveyor in my county two years ago. No office, no pay, no nothing except people that call 311 are given my name for surveying. Some County Surveyors I know have an office in the local courthouse, not me. The "position" has brought me some work, mostly boundary disputes over fences, etc., some people think that I will come out and survey for free. One of the first county surveyors in my county was Daniel Boone, then Squire Boone, I'm sure it was a different status back then.
I had many a dealings with the Hillsborough County Surveyor in Tampa back in the day. That job became available when I left Tampa, should of applied for that one...:-/
