What are some of the most helpfull interview questions when interviewing a rodman? I searched the topics and found some from 2010, however I am hoping we have some new members with new questions.

So, have you got that drug problem under control?

1. Are you opposed to an adjusting schedule that is subject to change on a daily basis?
2. Are you opposed to showing up 15-20 minutes early every day and getting equipment ready?
3. Do you have stable transportation?
4. Can I time you while you set up this instrument? (Joking)
5. Are you willing to invest some personal time into learning parts of this job that you may not currently know? or have questions about?

Of course I didn't vet these through HR because they would most likely nix all but #1.:-)

Sounds to me like the potential rod-man needs to ask you first what your definition of a rod man may be and what do you expect from him. For myself I run the rod around here.

- Do you have a valid drivers license and may I see it for my insurance company?
- When I make out your paycheck, will I also have to make one to Friends of the Court?
- Are you looking to make surveying a career?
- Are you willing to take books/manuals home with you to learn on your own time?
and just so you know, the company policy is that your cell phone stays in the glove box of the truck when we get out.

Can you drive a standard transmission vehicle? No joke - a lot of people can't and most survey chariots are manual.

1. Do you have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license?

2. Do you understand that you will be expected to work in hot/cold/muddy/wet/dirty conditions?

3. Do you understand that coming to work under the influence of alcohol/drugs is grounds for dismissal?

4. Can you work in wooded areas with snakes and stinging insects?

Do you like outdoor work?
How do you protect against sunburn?
Are you OK with mosquitos, chiggers, horse flies, bees, wasps and hornets?
Tell me how you feel about snakes.
Can you work outdoors when it is HOT?
Can you work outdoors when it is cold?
Can you see this (holding up some orange glo flagging)?
What color is it?
Lay out 4 strips of flagging and ask which they can see best.
Here, let me see you swing this sledge.
How much 4 wheel drive driving have you done?
See these two stakes? Go across the street and get in line with them.
How tall a fence can you jump?

How do you ask "Do you think the world, or your employer" owe you a living?" without actually saying that?

Tell me about your proudest moment.

The response should tell you much about the person and what they value. It should also show how much passion they have for being really good at whatever they are doing.

All day every day give me someone with a thirst for knowledge and zero existing surveying skills over someone with existing skills but a lackadaisical attitude. If you find someone with both the thirst and some skills, hire them. (Right after they pass the drug test and criminal background check.)

I've never had the opportunity to interview multiple candidates, but I've always dreamed of taking a few candidates to the backyard, pointing to the birdhouse in the swamp and offering the job to the first one who can get there and back while carrying a concrete bound.

I put the birdhouse in the swamp at the property corner, so there can be no grumblings that I am not willing to do the same type of task.

Yeah, looking for a laborer is a bit different than for a survey technician. If the rodman position is basically a laborer then all you need ask is to see the green card or drive thru town and make the "wave".

Where do you see yourself in one year, five years if we hire you?

15-20 minutes early

You can ask them to show up early, but they are on the clock from when you require them to be there. 15 min x 5 days x 52 weeks = 65 hrs of pay that the Dept of Labor will tell you to pay them. - plus fines.
