Bought my wife a $14 Chinese disto-like meter and it measures just like my real Disto? Go figure.?ÿ
But WAIT!!!!?ÿ If you buy now, we'll add..........LOL!
Hey you folks are pooping on pop here but really a simple pocket disto good to 1/8" could be useful for condo surveys and possibly other tasks.?ÿ Their instructions are hard to find but apparently set on its base or side it'll be good to a hundredth or so.?ÿ I suspect they don't work outdoors in full sun.?ÿ But for $40 it's worth playing with.
What y'all think about if you can set 2 gps points, strong points and have a corner under heavy canopy.
Distance inx. To locate the corner.
Heck of a lot less cumbersome than 100' steel tape when you in low country S.C. heaven.,, That would be the Swamp in all it's Glory.
We steel tape it but something you can carry in your Army surplus BDU's.
I still carry plumb bob and mini prism.
Might be old surveyor but it works.
I'd rather go with one of these Bosch models, which is sold at Home Depot, for just a bit more money. Can be set to read out in meters or decimal feet. "Indirect mode" figures the horizontal or vertical component of a slant measurement.
Certain Bosch models with bluetooth can be linked to your GPS and robot using SurvCE.?ÿ This allows you to do pretty decent GPS offsets and/or automatically measure your robot rod height (allegedly--I have never tried the latter).?ÿ If you buy a Bosch that is not officially supported, you can always try this driver:
Note--no affiliation w/ the website nor have I tried his drivers.?ÿ My TruPulse linked automatically and I never bothered to try our office's 50c Bosch.?ÿ YMMV, buyer beware, etc.
@samlucy3874?ÿ ?ÿ I have gone to a 12oz bob though, that 16oz was just too much.
Bought a Bosch Level at Lowes once, when we needed one instantly, had no time to order through a survey supplier.?ÿ?ÿ
Had two crews working in drizzle, one using my old Sokkia level.?ÿ?ÿ
The next morning the Sokkia was fine, but the Bosch was all fogged up inside, and we couldn't see anything.?ÿ Piece of junk.
My point is, it may say Bosch, but may also just be the same Chinese instrument, repackaged with the Bosch name
Hmmm. Reminds me of Lucas electrical I had on a British sports car back in the 60s.
Having been hopelessly addicted to British motorcycles (and a car or two) my entire life I'm very familiar with Lucas electrical equipment.?ÿ I use to have a bumper sticker on an old tool box that read "Lucas Electrics - First with automatic dim and automatic flicker".
Old Lucas joke:
Q: Do you know why Brits like warm beer?
A: Because Lucas manufactures the thermostats.

Had a couple Brit bikes before I saw the light and went Honda.?ÿ Lucas, the prince of darkness.
No question that a Disto would be better and more durable, but if I drop the $60 Bosch in the sewer I will not?ÿ feel compelled to dive in after it.?ÿ ?ÿ
Leica better than Bosch. Bosch better than no-name internet unit. That's the hierarchy here.?ÿ ?ÿ
Did a boundary survey last week, recovered original monuments, set lath with flagging next to monuments. Everything looked good in the field and also after the office check. Provided the owner with original map and my plat showing distances between monuments.
Owner calls and says he measured between two of the monuments using a disto, brand unknown, and I was wrong by 10 feet. This measurement was across a field with brush, down a slope and through a chain link fence.
I informed the client I doubled checked my work and everything looked good. Client calls back the next day and said all was good, something wrong with his disto. He bought a 200 foot tape and measured it manually.
I'm still not sure why he was remeasuring the distances.?ÿ
