This is something I'd never seen, I wasn't travelling around 911 but it must have been similar then:

Oldest File??s GF works at an airport in the SE USA. Plane crews are frequently outnumbering passengers these days. Did they change your original return flight plans?
Tell me you didn't actually fly today!
Yes, that is W-E-I-R-D.
I was flying late Tuesday, on Monday I saw an exit row seat with no seat in front of it so I grabbed that one, there were 80 blank seats available. Then at 2am they pinged me telling me I was on a new plane, I had to pick a new seat, this time a bulkhead. There were 50 empty seats on that smaller plane at 9am, by 4pm there were 3 empty seats so I suppose they put another plane on. I'm guessing that they consolidated three planes into one smaller 757. My puddle jumper last flight had 15 passengers on a 50 seat plane.
Time to fly I guess, as far as physical contact there isn't much. On the plane or in the airport.
I will say I didn't travel on the 19th, but I did on the 18th, great day to travel if you don't like crowds or lines.
