Can those of you who use these robotic instruments tell me why anybody would buy a Leica over a Geomax.
Are the Leicas that much better? Is Leica Captivate software that much better than a Geomax with Carlson?
The GeoMax is a "secondary" stream fro Hexagon. So they will always be a model behind on the hardware.
As for the software it's going to be very much personal preference. I see Carlson have a great following based on service Never used it myself. I like Captivate and it's still improving with every release.
I suspect you will find Geomax users recommending it and vice versa.
Is there much support for Geomax/Carlson in Ireland?

I wished I could take a spin with a Leica TS operated by the Captivate software. I've used the Viva system, which works well when you adapt to Leica's reality.
I had read some time back there was an issue importing control files between Captivate job folders. I don't know what came of that though.

Carlson, on an Allegro, operating a Leica TCRPA-1200 series had to have been the most fluid, intuitive, and dependable experience for myself.

There is one Geomax dealer that I know of. I use Carlson Survey in the office and get support by email. The Geomax robots seem to be about 70% the cost of a Leica. Just wondering if the extra price for the Leica is worth it given the hardware is so similar.

Service network, and ability to use leica software like viva and captivate.
There is nothing wrong with leica software either.

I believe the leica and geomax to be the exact same thing, hardware-wise. So, no.

Far as I can tell it??s purely a personal preference. you??d have to try them both. Best you can do here would be to ask existing users if either software will run the routines that you will need in the field, and how they run. That way you??ll get answers from knowledge instead of ignorance.

I presume ignorant wasn't the word you were looking for. I wouldn't describe someone as ignorant because they haven't used brand x before.
Ignorance can be cured with knowledge.
Unfortunately, you can??t fix stupid.
EDIT: At least that is what my Daddy tells me.

I believe this useage of ignorant is the exact word he was looking for
Lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about a particular thing.
??I was largely ignorant of the effects of radiotherapy??
We use geomax with Carlson and really like them. Only down side I see is service on the instrument. I can take our Leica up the street to a Leica dealer and have calibrated and cleaned but have to ship our geomax to Atlanta since the Leica folks are not certified to work on geomax. Kinda crazy since they are pretty much the same.

yes, ignorance was the word i wanted.
no, i wouldn't describe people who haven't used brand x as ignorant of that brand x's capabilities either. if only because most people seem to only acknowledge the word as a pejorative.
my point was that if you ask broadly for opinions you may get brand X users giving opinions on why it's better than Y which may be based on ignorance of the full capabilities of brand Y. if you ask for users of brand Y to tell you how brand Y runs and how it will perform the tasks you want then you will hopefully get answers more likely based in experience and knowledge/expertise.
This thread was meant to garner some useful information about the differences between Geomax and Leica as I have not used either before. Once again another thread hijacked by people who can't contribute without insulting people.

Great thanks excellent post hope it gets lots of likes
I have a Leica TCRA1102+ and a GeoMax Zoom80 2" model. I put the Leica into semi-retirement in late 2015 because it started getting glitchy on occasion, and replaced it with the GeoMax. I run both with Carlson on a Surveyor+ over a Parani BT connection. The GeoMax has been almost identical in performance to the Leica, maybe a tad faster on rotation, but just as accurate. It also has the advantage of a BT radio handle, so I don't need to have the radio, battery and associated cables hanging on the tripod.
I don't have either Leica or GeoMax dealers nearby, so any service requires shipping the instrument. I've not had the GeoMax serviced yet, so I can't comment on the GeoMax service experience.
I'd buy GeoMax again without hesitation.

I ran a Leica 1203R for 3+ years and have been running a GeoMax Zoom 80 reflectorless 5" for the last 3 years with an Allegro DC running Carlson SurvCE v5.
The GeoMax performs identically to the Leica in my estimation, and the reflectorless feature is impressive. Also, I am able to get up to 1/4 mile tracking of the prism, haven't attempted any more than that. As was previously said, you will find the service options limited in comparison to Leica, although Allen Precision and Carlson do provide excellent customer support.
I currently run a TS-12 5" with SurvCE and its been great.
I also have a TS-15 running Viva ( latest Updates ) I found myself constantly tweaking the settings - And then realized I was making it run more like Carlson.
One of my field crew is using now and he loves it. My other crew is using the TS12 setup like mine and also loves it.
A few months ago I demoed A Carlson CR with SurvPC on a small tablet from Jim Carlson. I put it through a pretty tough demo. And I have to say it seemed to track faster than both of the Leica's and the auto-lock also seemed as good or even a little better. Jim also said if you get it from Carlson that SurvCE will also be installed on the Gun a no extra charge ( Nice for trucking into the woods when you have a helper ).
