Hi everyone,
I’m new here but thought that forums such as this would be the ideal to get a bit of advice...
I’m a land surveying professional that has recently moved into a slightly different arena. My new firm specialises in the supply of survey books, level books, mining transit books, waterproof notebooks and the like to the land surveying industry. Whilst I’ll obviously be selling books from all the major players, I’m in the process of working with a firm to design my own unique range of survey/level books.
And it’s with this that I could do with your advice! For all the land surveying pros at there... if you were to be able to choose, what useful formulae or surveying hints/tips, perhaps some conversion tables etc would you like to see on the first few pages of a survey/level book?
I’m thinking about the kind of things that a land surveyor, out in the field, would find really useful? Any ideas? In the end it’s people like you who I’m designing these things for so your advice would be incredibly useful.
If you want to get an idea of the kind of thing I’m doing just go to www.surveybooks.co.uk.
Thanks guys, much appreciated!

In the level book, on the right hand page, have a center column. This would mean an odd number of columns. Seven columns would be perfect.

Leave the left page as is, I would like the right page to be a 1 in 10 grid as an aid in sketching to a rough scale. I use rite in the rain loose leaf level paper for all.

I would like to see the pages numbered.
Numbering the pages is part of note keeping, how would you number loose leaf? Some used to use hard cover field books that were numbered and all jobs went into them until the book was full. Those books usually had an index done by the user in the book and another that was a book and page system.

For bound books, label the first page as an index. Number the left facing pages on the others.

Who uses field books ?
I number the page on the right 🙂
I do.

ditto. Prenumbered pages would be great.
Right on, Jud.
For me, Surveyor=Field book, or you're not doing it right. Old school was a good school.

Legible notes...:-)
Keep loose leaf binder paper available.
I prefer the level ruled pages. No problem making a sketch on level ruled.
Being a lefty, I write on the left page, starting from the back of the book.

Pre number the pages. Only write it on the right hand page.
