The ICon is their construction line of software and survey equipment.?ÿ I used it while working for a large construction outfit.?ÿ The software is pretty basic although I liked using it on the toughpad.?ÿ The green is their Survey line up.?ÿ I've never used that so I can't expand upon it.

@jflamm You can not work with that instruments with a pda with software like survce?

I don't know the answer to that.?ÿ We used the ICon software on a Panasonic Toughpad, an iPad Pro and the Leica "Toughpad", which I kind of liked for what we were doing.?ÿ The total station (i60), on the other hand, was a pile of junk, in my opinion.?ÿ It was antiquated.?ÿ Super slow servo drive.?ÿ Doesn't have active prism tracking.?ÿ This is from a guy that has used Trimble most of his career.?ÿ It was really aggravating for us and our carpenters to use these on site where there were other trades doing layout with Trimble active tracking equipment.?ÿ The ICon TS was like a rooster in a hen house chasing every other prism around.?ÿ ?ÿI thought they may have come out with an i70 or 80 that could've had some major improvements but I left that world a couple years ago before I got to see it.?ÿ?ÿ

Active prisms are nice for layout with a bunch of total stations at once on a single floor. But, since I am not a carpenter, I have no use for them.

Hey,

Ive been using Leica Icon for about two years now with MS60. Before this i had captivate for about 3 years and smartworx before that.

Few flaws/cons that come to my mind.

+Easy layout. Picking lines/points from imported dxf is faster. You can change control lines/points on the fly while staking.

+System is decently fast and allows simultaneous display of multiple dxf files. Layers can be turned on/off kinda the same way as autocad works. System gets slow when you have too much jobs/imported dxf on the same project.

+Works ok with IFC models. 3D orbit works ok. IFC model colors are strange though or i just dont know how it works.

-Cant stake IFC planes. Only IFC lines/points work.

-Water/snow messes up touchscreen badly->you have to use "wet mode" on touch screen meaning you have to work with bare hands on cold weather.

-Prism lock/search is somewhat bad on wet conditions. Using umbrella on top of prism or wiping it with a cloth regularly helps.

-Wait and lock function doesnt work with icon. Dynamic lock works (Atleast MS60 and ICR80 has it).

-Control points need to be manually turned visible from the layer manager for resection and then switched off again. Otherwise they hinder map visibility. This should be made automatic.

-Elevation cant be transfered vertically the same way captivate/smartworx works. On Icon elevation is not "glued to wall" as it is with captivate/smartworx. (I think that Icon locks measured slope distance while captivate locks perpendicular distance?) You cant single measure distance to wall and then run crosshairs up to the desired level.

-2 face measurements doesnt work with autostationing and autostationing feels less reliable on icon compared to captivate.

-MS60 camera doesnt work with Icon. Icon Scan functions require invidual license to be purchased even though captivate has it as standard I think.

-I like numpads on remote controller which icon tablet doesnt have. Coding is slow as you cant key in numbers. instead you have to choose codes tapping like 3 or more flip menus.

-Cant stake perpendicular into pipe centerline if the pipe is not vertical. Doesnt have the display option for "shortest 3D distance to line"

Overall Icon is much more stripped down software compared to Captivate. Newest versions have had some good upgrades compared to old. For example 2face measurements and option to change export folder to user defined. (Microsoft onedrive folder for example).

Icon is suited for easy site layout while captivate can be used for more complex engineering.

@johnymal No, i dont know anyone.

I believe SurvCE is not very popular in Europe.

There was at one time a version of SurvCE called "Leica SurvCE" which came on the Leica 1200 data collectors.
It listed the Leica Redline Powertracker robot and the earliest Icon robot, both of which were modified 1200's.
Because these instruments didn't have faceplates, the calibration routine was built into the Leica SurvCE program.
No-one at Carlson knew anything about it though, when I inquired a few years ago.
It's possible regular SurvCE might have also ran those instruments, using the 1200 driver, but you wouldn't have any way to do the calibration.

Survce is very popular and easy to use in Europe that I work.?ÿ

Also I have found it that is better than Trimble Access so far!

@johnymal?ÿ

Would have to strongly disagree that SurvCE/PC is better then Trimble Access or Lecia Captivate in any way except that it allows you to use off brand equipment to save cost. If money isn't an issue then the other two are head and shoulders above in functionality (e.g both support ellipsoidal distances in cogo that SurvCE doesn't, just one example). Even Geomax's XPAD is better in my view.

?ÿ

Whatever you are familiar with is usually easier to use but I wouldn't conflate that with meaning it is better.

@jflamm?ÿ

I use the toughpad with fieldgenius running an old green Leica 1203+.The toughpad is an awesome tablet, fast and seems to last forever.?ÿ

As far as the robot goes the speed of turning is definitely slow compared to the Trimble but it keeps a lock no issues 95% of the time and predicts as I walk past large objects and picks me up on the other side. In 10 years I recall seeing one other total station nearby twice. Once I had no idea where the prism was and the other time I had to have the excavator put a hat on his 360 prism (he was running an icon) so I wouldn't get locked onto it. Total stations and prisms just aren't something we see often on any of our job sites. I did use a Sokkia ix 503 with the clumsy RC unit on top of the prism and it still lost lock way too often. It could spin faster than the old Leica but somehow that didn't help it maintain a lock.?ÿ

I spent a day with the s5 and it's definitely better at tracking through heavy brush but other than that the only reason I'm looking forward to the switch is so I don't have to use fieldgenius anymore especially now that they gave me an r10.

I'm not sure if the icon is much different than my 1200 series Leica but I guess if you are working in a position that you would always be losing lock the search time would be more frustrating to me, but I'm always trying to hold my prism up and steady and keep line of sight.?ÿ
