First, check out this item on eBay. A genuine Goldsmith Chandlee compass, current bid $499.

Now check out Lot 578, sold in 2007 by Wiederseim Associates, Inc., for slightly more than $499.

Is this one of those situations when, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is?

Check back in 21 hours when there have been more bids.

Maybe it's a great deal.

The photos on both sites are the same photos. The needle position and shadows and other details of each photo are exactly the same.
It reeks.....

SCAM!

Look at the rust speckles on the top of the handle. Exactly the same in both pics.

Yes it sounds somewhat suspicious. More so without a reserve price. The seller has a feedback rating of 10 transactions, but none since 2004. The only ones where I can deduce the merchandise are for books.

A lot of the fraud that goes on involves finding accounts that haven't been used lately and getting the password through a deceptive "Update Your Account" email. Then they sell a few nonexistent high dollar items and get the payment made by some non-refundable method.

On the other hand, it does say they take PayPal.

And he posted 9 pictures to eBay whereas I only see 2 of those on the auction house site (plus one not reused). Where did he get the others if he doesn't have the instrument? Did the auction house have more somewhere?

If you are willing to put up with some hassle, you could find out how good the eBay protection plan is.

What would Dale do?

Bill

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn Dale is the actual owner of this instrument.

One thing is certain. Dale wouldn’t be selling it on eBay for $499.

You and I think alike- that was my first thought when I saw the message header. Too funny.

It "sold" for...

I wish I had some way to contact the "buyer." I'd like to hear the rest of the story.

Listing and seller removed from ebay

Looks like it has been identified as a fraud and removed. The link that did bring up the sold listing now gets:

This listing (120629075884) has been removed, or this item is not available

The seller jicheng is
"No longer a registered user"
which pretty much confirms that his account had been hijacked.
