Maybe should be under a different category. But anyway, I thought I would look up the cost of one of the Writing Legal Descriptions books on behalf of an employee who said he couldn't find it. I did a search and found a lot of new and used starting @ $150+. Even used ones. Larry P. sells them new for $45 on his site. I don't get the price difference. Anyway, I saw one advertised @ $0.99 and it said it was in "good" condition. I decided "how can I go wrong"? So I ordered it and paid an extra $3.99 shipping and handling for a grand total of $4.98. It finally came today. Binding seems good, no markings inside at first inspection except for a land surveyor's stamp on the inside cover. "John Philip Geffken, Oklahoma LS 1185". I assume that's old (it would be in CO.) (I thought I would get an email stating that they meant $99. I would have cancelled the order if that were the case)

Survey books these days...it's hard to find a decent used book @ <$100. I don't get it. (Good luck finding "Skelton"'s book at a decent price)

(I got it through "Alibris" if anyone wondered).

Early editions of Clark too; I seem to remember paying over $100 for a 2nd Edition.

Consider yourself lucky. The cheapest one right now on Alibris is $165.

Maybe I should sell mine. The book is very dated.

Probably doesn't mention ECEF coordinates at all, eh?

Leon,
I'll pay you 5 times what I paid for mine, plus a $3.99 shipping and handling fee.

Writing Legal Descriptions is outdated? I assume you are making a joke, but I don't see a smiley-winky face behind your comment.

Ha! And here I was struttin' around thinking no one could beat that 99¢ price. 😉

Has this book moved to the public domain? I was thinking it had to be much older. Maybe someone just scanned it and put it up on line. I like having my hard copy around, although having the pdf would be handy at times. I sold the book I found on line to my employee (for $5.00 and here it only cost me 4.98 with the shipping: I showed him)

bookzz

There are a ton of books on that site that are NOT in the public domain (try searching your favorite, currently publishing, fiction author). And they seem to have moved domains from bookza.org to bookzz.org

Route surveys by Russell R. Skelton? There are 2 copies under $15 on abebooks.com. I do see that one bookseller has a low rating. There are several reasonable (I think!) books by David Clark. Some are on-demand/reprints from overseas, but some originals are listed. ABEbooks is Canadian-based so you may be dinged with currency conversion fees.

Thank you both! So the Skelton is on abebooks for $100.49. There are several inexpensive copies of the Clark, both 2nd and 3rd editions.

Melita, Obviously I wasn't specific enough. A lot of guys on here quote Ray Hamilton Skelton from his "The Legal Elements of Boundaries and Adjacent Properties" book. It's the only book I've ever seen by RH Skelton, so I didn't get specific on what book. Likewise, a lot of guys prefer the older versions of Clark on Surveying and Boundaries. by Frank Emerson Clark vs. the later editions that are written totally by authors other than "Clark".

I might look in to that Route Surveying Book, however.

Man, I got lucky a few years back and got a really nice early Skelton for $37.:-)
I remember losing out on three or four previous auctions at around $100 before I finally got it.

I have Three Wattles Books, One being the Infamous 1976 Edition by Gurdon that stands the test of time, and two others being revised 10th editions (1974) of his father, William's book printed on different paper formats. Gurdon did the revising.

I think Rich (or someone much older than I) mentioned they had a late 50's edition of Williams book.

If I paid over $100 for a book, I would remember it.

Well, O.K. , maybe not.
I've paid more than that for things I don't remember:-)

I did the same on Skelton's book somewhere around $35 a few years back. I also got a first-edition of William Wattles' book. Red cover instead of the later yellow. I think it was even less. I had a lot harder time reading that.
