I recently purchased a Trimble SLR (part No. 571204360) to use as a backsight. When used with a georadio power source, the power and LR lights come on. When used with the 2 AA batteries (only/no georadio power), there is either no indication of the power and LR lights or the lights only power on for a few seconds. I have tried a couple of new sets of batteries.
Is this normal?

No, that is not normal. The most likely cause is corrosion in the AA battery cavity. If you shine your cell phone's flashlight down the hole you might be able to gently clean the contacts. otherwise you will need to use the external battery source

Thanks for the reply.

So, you are saying the SLR prism in non-Long Range mode should run on the 2 AA's, correct?

The reason why I am not sure (besides it is not working) is that 2 AA's in series provide 3 volts, where the Georadio batteries provide 12 volts. Unless the Georadio's voltage is stepped down, it doesn't seem that both of these power sources were intended to be used. But why else the AA's????

If the AA's will power the unit in non-LR mode, how long will the batteries last when run continuously?

I am considering taking the housing apart and seeing what I can do to clean out any corrosion - thoughts?

There is a product called ECG RX3200 Electronics Wash I use to clean everything from motherboards to wire ends.

It is a must to remove any plug from the power source, unplug from the wall and/or take out the batteries so no current is in the object. This stuff is very flammable.

Most times there is no need to take anything apart.

Simply spray on and in an instant your object is clean and there is no residue, the stuff practically disintegrates whatever is on the object and evaporates and works with most plastics.

If you are comfortable working on electronics and have a clean space to do it, you should be okay. Static discharge should not be an issue with the board, but it is always good to make sure you are grounded prior to touching any electronic board. (static shock can kill the small components).
You could call Chris our technician or your local Trimble dealer for advice. email me if you want the number

Back when I was using the 5603, we eventually gave up using AA batteries and went with external power. Reason - the batteries would overheat and leak when the thing was left on. That corroded the terminals, yadda, yadda.... It's just so easy to forget to turn those things off. Very likely that has happened to yours.
