We chuckle when we see cartoons or stories involving computer technicians passing out guidance on how to fix what seems to be an insurmountable problem with a computer.
Yesterday afternoon I wanted to look back through by AutoCad files for two old surveys of mine. My computer essentially told me to go take a flying leap because it claimed I had timed out on my authorization. No matter what I tried, AutoCad said, "Go away" Complained to my wife and she said, "Have you tried shutting down completely and rebooting?" Well, of course not. That's stupid. Right? Then the phone rang and I got distracted.
A bit later in the middle of some major thunder, lightning, wind and a downpour our electricity went off and finally back on. When I got back to the computer, it was off. Turned it on and AutoCad worked normally.
A lot of people ask me for help with their computers. If it's Windows, the first thing I tell them to do is reboot. I swear, it fixes the problem about 90% of the time.
In the rare event that doesn't work, I can basically just show up. When I arrive to assess the problem, I often hear, "Hmmm, now it's not doing that."
