Anybody got one? How do you like it?
These are the lightweight tonneau covers that are supposed to be super easy to remove/install.
Thinking of getting one for my truck which sees light action as a field truck (a couple of days a month at most).
I have never used one but I agree it would be nice to have a lighter weight cover. My fiberglass tonneau is heavy and I can't remove it by myself.
I put one on my truck which I use for solo surveying during the week and farming/towing on the weekends. It takes a minute and a half to put it on and 30 seconds to take off by myself. I love it. The advertisements show a football team standing on one and they are tough. I stand on mine to clean the roof of my truck. They are lockable also. The one issue that periodically happens is that one side will bounce the locking lever off, but no performance problems happen from that. The lid stays down fine even if completely unlocked.
Tom,
What is a ballpark price for one, if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks,
Jimmy
I just checked and depending on model about $750

$750 from my dealer to fit a 06 chevy with 6.5' bed
i'm scheduled to get it installed tomorrow so i'll let you guys know how it works for me in a couple of weeks.
Thanks guys. I had a fiberglass tonneau cover on my F150 Supercrew before I switched over to the full camper shell. I paid about $900 or so for it.
I really liked it, it was secure, and looked good. I just needed more room.
I'm sure you'll be pleased. Just be sure to post pictures!
I have one on my 07 Chev, my comments would be the same as Tom's.
Mine was $500 installed... it was a "scratch & dent" special... one corner has a 1" crack, that doesn't affect the reliability of the top... it's secure, water-tight and looks good.
We did have to replace the plastic trim that is attached to the lip of the tailgate.
I've had one on my F-150 for about
3 years now. It has held up really well.
It connects at the cab by hooking over a couple of 'studs' that are part of the mounting system connected to the bed. Once hooked on, a ring similar to a key ring loops through a hole to lock it from sliding forward.
At the back, it has a lock on each side of the bed which can be turned to latch the top down, then you can either lock it or not.
There is a small LED light cluster at the tailgate end of the topper. It is not very bright, but is useful.
It raises by a gas strut on each side of the bed, and has a nylon strap to grab and pull the top down.
It is very easy to install and remove with two people. It can be removed and installed with one person. It is not heavy, but it is kind of awkward to handle. If you are removing with one person, here is how I found to be easiest:
Remove rings from cab side of topper.
Raise topper from tailgate.
Unclip one gas strut and hook into attached holder (these don't hold extremely well).
While gently supporting topper in up position walk to other gas strut.
Unclip 2nd gas strut.
Lower topper most of the way to down position.
Push from back toward cab a couple of inches.
Go to cab and lift topper up and back to disengage hook.
Repeat on other side of cab.
At tailgate, pull topper back while leaning under topper.
When about centered under topper, it is fairly easy to now lift and move off of truck.
I usually place my topper on the 5X10 trailer in my driveway. It does come with a kit for hanging the topper in your garage if you choose to do so.
It has been water tight as far as I am aware. Improved gas mileage by about 2 mpg when I got it. Basically no maintenance - just rinse it off when you are washing the truck.
The logo on the back has curled at the edges just a little bit.
my top lid has two locks on the back on top.
On frosty mornings I have had ice chunks get pushed down in there by the key which makes the lock not turn. The remedy is to wait for the morning to warm up or warm water to melt the ice.
> or warm water to melt the ice.
Just don't let anyone know where the warm water comes from 😉
I had one on my 04 F150. It worked great. It even made the truck ride better because there was no turbulence at the tailgate. We just put Bed Slides on our work trucks this might be real handy with a Toneau.🙂 🙂
Update with pics
I had this installed last week and worked out of it most of the week doing small boundary surveys and checking a couple of things out. Plenty of room for tools. No leaks, it rained hard 1 day this week. Easy enough to get in and out of. Not as nice as working out of a camper top but pretty close.
Steve,
What kind of bed slides did you go with?
