Yesterday morning I finally put together the start of a rack in my truck.

That is looking good. Please post more pictures as you keep working on it. This is going to turn out really nice.
Ya, thats looking nice!
There is a place right in town here that makes sliding units for pickups and motorhomes etc. The guys (not just surveyors) that have them around here in their pickups like them. My buddy as them in his motorhome and never had a problem with them. Can pull out a good sized cooler of beer the full length with no sags or hangups. They're well made units.

Steve - I was thinking of something like this, how do your trucks handle shovels, Tripod legs, probes etc. with the sliding drawer?
You can build an organizer on the slide so that tripods, shovels, etc have there own homes but the whole thing slides out so you can get to supplies that are up near the cab.
This isn't the best photo of mine because the cooler and wet clothes are hiding the slots for the tools but you can get the gist of how I have it set up. My "slide" is from Highway Products out of Oregon and is rated for a load of 2000lbs. The aluminum dividers were made for me by a local shop. On level ground it slides out one handed whether empty or loaded to the ceiling with wood stakes.
We have a 3 level Wooden box on top of it with slots for tripods shovel and rods. It is a little heavy but it works.
Looks nice!
What are you using for rollers?
Casters set along a 2x4 at 1.25' o/c.
