I have a Trimble R8 with a TSC2 controller running Trimble Access software. How do I store a static file either on the receiver or the controller to use for post processing?

You can set up the R8 to automatically log data using GPSConfigurator

Thank you. I think that software came with the package. This will store the file on the receiver, correct?

Yes it will store the files in the reciever you can download them off the reciever using a bluetooth connection and your controller. If i remembver correctly you must pay close attention to how the green lights blink to make sure you are storing static obs.

Looks like I do not have the correct cable to config the receiver by the computer. Is there a way to do this through the controller?

I don't think so. But I have never tried to turn static off with just the controller.

I don't have a TSC2 in front of me, but as I recall, you can go into the Survey Styles menu while connected to the receiver and edit the fast-static survey style to log data to either the collector or the receiver. Logging data to the the collector is the safest bet to be sure you are actually storing data, but then sometimes you will get the multiple "markers" mentioned in an earlier post which could cause it to get rejected by OPUS - at least I THINK that is what causes it...

I personnaly prefer to log on the receiver. Any unexpected break in communication between the controller and the receiver will stop the recording. Plus, no extra memory weight on the DC. They seem to work better that way.

Anyway, personal choice.

I also prefer logging to the receiver, but after too many instances of crews coming back in with no data, I decided it was safer to log to the controller. There have been no more blank sessions since then. Before they would set it to log to the receiver, but for some reason it would not record anything on occasion. Fooling with Configurator did not seem to help, and we don't collect enough static data to make it worth spending days trying to figure the whole mess out.

Well, without the correct cable to config the receiver I tried to log a static file to the DC. I found the option in Survey Styles as you mentioned and set the parameter to collector but after a test run I could not see what path it stored the file in. Do you know what type of file and/or what extension it would have?

Does the receiver have memory on board? If not, then you have to log data to the DC.

The native file in the unit will have the extention *.T01 when you download the file using trimble data transfer program it will convert it to a *.dat file. You can create a static GPS survey style in the controller and set up the storage parameters such as store in receiver, store in controller or both. I would not reccomend a bluetooth connection if you are only storing in the controller use a cable. I have had problems using the bluetooth before on static sessions. Tha advantage to storing in the controler is that you can monitor the session like occupation time number of sats, PDOD and such.

Look in the "Trimble Data" folder> Well, without the correct cable to config the receiver I tried to log a static file to the DC. It should be in the Trimble Data folder. If you use Data Transfer to download it it will convert it to a .dat file - if you use windows mobile, you can use rnpkr00.exe from Trimble to convert the .t01 file to .dat.

The type of file depends on what flavor of R8 we're talking about. If this is an R8-2 or R8-3 with the GLONASS option you'll be looking for a .to2 file. If you use the Data Transfer program to create a .DAT file it will NOT have any GLONASS data. If you want to use static GLONASS data (I haven't found it all that helpful for static yet) you'll need to use the .t02 file.

If you log to the controller, now you need one for each receiver. I normally take 3 receivers with me when I do OPUS/static work. Our office can't afford to have 3 controllers with one person.

Copy the static style (or PPK) already in the controller and modify it to your needs. Log to the receiver and set your logging interval to 10 or 15 sec if you are doing OPUS work. If you log at 1 or 2 sec intervals, its just way too much data and noise that doesn't need to be there.

Create a "dummy" job to start each receiver with and start them up just like any old base point. If its logging data, it will flash at 2-3 second intervals (much slower that a low battery flash). Bluetooth to the receiver, check your receiver files, import the file and view the info of that file. Exit ALL the way out and do it again a couple of minutes later. The file size should have grown by at least a few Kb.

To download out of the receiver, you must use the yellow cable that has a serial on one end and the LIMO on the other. Some of those black cables that have the same type of connectors are parallel cables and will not communicate with the receiver.

Repeat: Use only the yellow cable that Trimble provides...

Ok guys, thanks for the tip. Using 9pin cable for collection. Found the T02 file in the Trimble data folder. Using ActivSync to download. Can i use the Rinex convert program and then upload to OPUS?

I don't recall exactly, but I think you have to convert to .dat first using runpkr00, then convert to rinex. OPUS will take a .dat file directly, but I usually use teqc to convert it to rinex and run QC first. That way if it gets rejected you can edit the file to fix the problem.

.to2 files will covert to rinex directly using Trimble's Convert to Rinex utility available here.
