I have used the Trimble GPS Configurator in the past to change the settings on 5800/R8/SPS780 receivers using a 9 pin serial cable. Don't have any computers left with serial port to plug into. Bought an adapter to hook it up, but the software won't recognize the port. Any suggestions to get it to work?

What kind of adapter? I bought one from Radio Shack that adapts my 9-pin to a USB. The brand name on it is "Gigaware". Hope this help.

You may be able to use the device properties in the device manager to set the port for your adapter to one the software knows about

Try:
Start Run Devmgmt.msc

Look for:
Ports (Com and LPT)

Select your adapter from the list

Then right mouse click and properties

We had to buy several USB-serial adapters because they never seemed to work the same on different laptops and pc's. and non of our old cheap ones worked on win7. But I found one from Xetatronix that does work on win7.

The USB -> serial ports can be temperamental at best, after I moved to an express card adapter from Brainboxes, all my serial port worries with modern hardware and WIN7 went away.

Many of the USB to serial adaptors do not create true serial ports, which may create connectivity problems when using those "legacy" devices. One solution is to spend a bit of extra money and get something really designed to create a serial port.

Here's a link:

I purchased a windows 7 compatible serial card and installed it into my desktop. Easy to do, works great.
