If I buy a new ADL Pro, do I also need to upgrade the radio in my Topcon Hiper Pro?

If the bandwidth on your receiver is 25KHz then yes, you need to upgrade to 12.5KHz. Also don't forget to amend your FCC license.

If the HiPer Pro has the original radio board in it, it is a Satel spread spectrum radio and will not work with any other type of radio.

So yes, if you purchase an ADL radio, you'd need a compatible board in the HiPer Pro.

According to PacCrest, you can use a 25 kHz receiver with a 12.5 kHz transmitter.
(POB Magazine-October 2012/pg. 26) That of course is with PacCrest HPB (base) and PDL (rover) radios, your application with the Hipers may be different.
OR you can continue to transmit in the 25 kHz bandwidth if done so @ 19,200 bps or higher.
PacCrest is having a [sarcasm]generous[/sarcasm] trade-in offer of $200 for your obsolete transmitter. Visit their site:

Correction

I actually have a Hiper PLUS receiver, not a Hiper Pro.

Correction

If your rover is a HiPer+, and it still has the original radio board in it, it is a Pacific Crest receive-only radio. It may take a bit of tweaking of the frequency that you are broadcasting on the base, but the rover should theoretically be able to receive the broadcast.

So it is a possibility, from what I am told that you could get that combination to work.

Radios - Narrowbanding - more bad news

I talked with our local dealer and found out that getting our HPB450 35w radios re-configured to a 12.5 kHz circuit board is no longer a $500 option - PacCrest has run out of those circuit boards and is no longer making them for obsolete radios. So - for us there's no option left but to buy new radios, either TDL or ADL to be compliant.
🙁

Feel your pain Joe. On the bright side, I just upgraded to the TDL450H and it works great and is a lot more flexible.

DWolfe -
did you look at the ADL radio also? I'm waiting on costs for each to compare, including the new cables necessary.

Radios - Narrowbanding - more bad news

No I didn't. I bought my HPB450 in July of 2011 specifically asking if it was going to be compliant with the upcoming narrowbanding rules. I found a dealer http://tknbe.trimble.com:8080/pdf?id=f28af90121&pg=0&iphl=hpb450:rules:is:HPB450:compliant:rule:narrowbanding:narrowband:FCC:rule d">bulletin on the Trimble site from June of 2011 that said that the HPB450 was never going to work with the new rules. After a fairly lengthy process my dealer provided me with a new TDL450H in swap for the (like new) HPB450.

Doug
