( I'm posting this here in part because getting feedback up the line to Trimble is next to impossible, and I know there are TrimbleHeads lurking... )

I've just had a wee play with a new R12 rover / R10-2 base combo.

The rover is a plain R12 - not the 12i with inertial management. I didn't really get to play with it under challenging conditions, but it does seem quick to start and fix. Unfortunately in a bid to save $$$ my (expletive deleted) management decided to un-spec the ebubble. Not having this renders the unit harder to use than our current R10's for about half our daily tasks (== fail)

It also meant a new version Access on the controller - there are a few subtle differences. In particular the video display loses screen real estate to a toolbar you don't need and can't get rid of (==fail)

I am most unimpressed with the cases - the new R12 small form factor is good. But you have to remove the quick release and the aerial to put the unit away. The same goes for the new case layout for the R10-2. Its a pain-in-the-you-know-where. Obviously designed by marketing, not field crew. The new is not as good as the old (== fail).

Looks like these puppies will about as popular in our office as the TSC-7's - which are always the last to be selected.

Love it. Speak the truth. The TSC7 is like a 17" laptop...kinda defeats the whole idea.

@jim.cox

We're looking at getting a bit of Trimble kit (scanner), and an online search indicates that Trimble NZ is SITECH, and their website seems to be all construction and machine control, so I'm not hopeful of a response.

@richard-imrie

You need to be talking to Allterra for the Trimble survey line.

Same company, just different shirts; caps and pricelist.

Good luck, hope your wallet is deep and remember to count your fingers after signing with them.

Following. Would really like some more feedback on how the R12 compares with the R10 under challenging conditions aside from the dog and pony show.?ÿ

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

Would really like some more feedback on how the R12 compares with the R10 under challenging conditions

It's not the R12, but rather the ProPoint GNSS engine, that makes the difference. R10-2s are effectively R12s from a hardware standpoint, and as such can be upgraded to ProPoint.

We have noticed an improvement in tough conditions over the R10-1. Faster initialization for sure, seems to hold it better too. Gotta have full GNSS at the base and the rover for sure.

It's hard to quantify of course, but I would also say that ProPoint has more realistic and consistent precision estimates. When mixing RTK/NRTK observations with total station observations, post-adjustment statistics confirm this, whereas in the past I think some of the precisions coming out of RTK engines were overly optimistic. It's far, far better than fix/float receivers like the R8, and still an improvement over the R10-1s.

We have also done a bit of testing with the R12i IMU+GNSS tilt measurement...I was pretty skeptical at first, but when properly applied it is damned impressive. Staking out with it is very, very cool, as it applies the heading/tilt information to direct the rod tip instead of the receiver itself.

We have had to do some creek/river cross sections from small boats - it was nice to be able to stick that rod tip into the bank at a 45 degree angle, move the receiver to dial in the IMU precisions, and tag an observation without having to step out of the boat and plumb up the rod.

We bought R10ƒ??s a few months before I retired and got a free upgrade to the r12 software. ?ÿI personally like the units and the packaging. ?ÿI never gave a second thought to having to take the antenna off. ?ÿWe went all in with the purchase to, built in low power radios, a 35 watt external base radio, VRS, and two identical R10 units.

I used them both before the upgraded software and after the upgrade. ?ÿIƒ??m pretty hard to impress and always a little skeptical of the sales pitch. ?ÿI was impressed and itƒ??s not all just a sales pitch. ?ÿWould I go into the deep woods in August and expect to get a good shot? ?ÿNo. ?ÿConditions I thought was a little sketchy with our old Topcon units seemed to be a breeze for the Trimble stuff. ?ÿ

We bought a Ranger 7 before the GPS purchase, which is the same as a TSC 7 but running Survey Pro software. ?ÿI like it also. ?ÿIt is big and the bracket it came with mounts it out there quite a ways. ?ÿWe messed with the mounting and got it in a lot closer to the pole. ?ÿI used a Yuma for several months also which weighs about as much as a brick, but you could carry the pole by it.

are you complaining about removing the antenna before you box the receiver? That goes for any RTK unit.

you can leave the quick release on your rod all the time, as I do.?ÿ

it sounds like you are coming from a R8/6/4 unit, so I have no idea how you can say the unit it not vastly better, faster than what you had. All you commented on was the size. Iƒ??ve taken my R12i under spruce trees with lots of low hanging branches, gotten a fix in 30 to 90 seconds. Then reset satellite tracking , gotten a fix within 30 seconds and leaving the rod in the same spot recorded observations within 0.05 feet of each other.?ÿ

you complain about the small controls icons on the left side of the large TSC7 screen - complaining about seeing video...yet this was a complaint about the R12.?ÿ

what bubble are you referring to? The e-bubble the R10 has? If so it is a useless feature as it has to be rotated for minutes to calibrate the bubble and the e-bubble is affected by steel, power lines, etc making it very unreliable.

To me, your complaints about the performance of the R12 does not match reality.

and the R12 has a faster CPU than the R10-1, tracks more signals (R10-1 cannot track satellite number higher than C30 of Beidou), extended battery life

No. We pack our R10's with antenna on

> you can leave the quick release on your rod all the time, as I do.

Rod is also used for prism. What to do with QR now?

> you complain about the small controls icons on the left side of the large TSC7 screen

I use a TSC-3

> what bubble are you referring to? The e-bubble the R10 has? If so it is a useless feature as it has to be rotated for minutes to calibrate the bubble

Its really handy when the pole prism is above eye height - like checking boxing for concrete

> and the e-bubble is affected by steel, power lines, etc making it very unreliable.

I disagree - while it does need frequent calibration, I find it reliable and accurate.

> To me, your complaints about the performance of the R12 does not match reality

I have no real issue with the performance - its the day to day practicality - for me its not going to be any much better the R10 I already use
