Broke two hammers (6# 8#) on the same ir today.?ÿ Thought i was still driving through the stabilized. Pretty sure it was the top of the box culvert now.?ÿ Also found out you can hammer a 1/2" cap on a 5/8"ir.?ÿ Mondays are something.
Two hammer handles.?ÿ Busting a hammer head would be something to see.
Hammers made me think of nails.?ÿ Nails made me think of the old saying, "Deader than a doornail".?ÿ Apparently, that is a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery old saying.
Dead as a doornail
Dead as a doornail?ÿis a phrase which means not alive, unequivocally deceased. The term goes back to the 1300s, the phrase?ÿdead as a doornail?ÿis found in poems of the time. The term?ÿdead as a doornail?ÿwas used in the 1500s by William Shakespeare, and in Charles Dickens?? A Christmas Carol in 1843. It is thought that the phrase?ÿdead as a doornail?ÿcomes from the manner of securing?ÿdoornails?ÿthat were hammered into a door by clenching them. Clenching is the practice of bending over the protruding end of the nail and hammering it into the wood. When a nail has been clenched, it has been dead nailed, and is not easily resurrected to use again. An alternative wording of the phrase?ÿdead as a doornail?ÿis?ÿdeader than a doornail.
Two hammer handles for everyone that isn't cow and thinks it's a hammer head that broke.
I'm sort of hard-headed that way. ???? ???? ???? ???? ?????ÿ Chuckle, chuckle.
All in fun, good buddy.
a month ago my wife and i blew up the motors in our cars in the same day.?ÿ both well maintained, generally reliable cars.?ÿ mine blew up on the way back from picking her up...
Just be glad the hammer head(s) didn't fly up and konk you in yer noggin or god forbid yer scrotum. ?????ÿ
@flyin-solo?ÿ If I recall, you had an old dodge.?ÿ Was your wife's car older than yours??ÿ And, how do you blow up a motor?
@hpalmer hahaha- no, that chrysler is gonna do just fine.?ÿ i don't even have it back yet- my brother's had it for a couple months, putting it back in shape.
@jitterboogie- outback wagon with about 95K on the clock (somewhat predictable, of the vintage that regularly blows head gaskets), and a 328i with 70k on it that i took off a friend's hands for the balance of the loan.?ÿ timing chain let go as- i subsequently learned- that motor is prone to do.?ÿ both cars have been meticulously maintained and driven like grandma-mobiles.?ÿ the beemer is probably gonna get fixed on their dime, as they lost a class action suit a year ago over this very issue.?ÿ i just have to dot a bunch of Is and cross some Ts, but in any event it's no huge loss.?ÿ regardless of the outcome there i'm selling that P.O.S. post haste.?ÿ will be the last bmw i ever own.
I've dabbled in European cars over the years, Renault, Audi, Porsche.?ÿ All were disappointedly expensive to maintain with quirky problems popping up, and all died prematurely, unfixable K-Jetronic system, water ingestion through the air intake causing hydraulic lockup (kaboom!), rusted out firewall(!).?ÿ They were fun to drive though.
Oh, except the original VWs.?ÿ From high school to my late 20s they were the schizzle.?ÿ At one time I had a 'Ghia, Bug and Van simultaneously, with a couple of spare engines which I'd swap in if there were problems, rebuild the sick one and store it.?ÿ Switching engines was less than an hour's effort and mostly simple tools were all that was needed to work on them.?ÿ Got good mileage too and were fantastic winter cars with the right tires.
I'm saddened owning modern cars that are OBDC with glass instrument clusters that require a trip to the mechanic to fix the simplest thing. Although engines have come a long way and now 200,000 to 250,000 miles is expected if you maintain them right.
Here we were focused on breaking two hammer handles?ÿ in one day and, at the same time, discussing Ol' Ted Dura (Dura).?ÿ If anyone could break three or more hammer handles in one day, it would have?ÿ been Ted.
Ted probably didn't use hammers, just pounded the bars in with his fist.
Ted probably didn't use hammers, just pounded the bars in with his fist.
When I was sixteen, my crusty ??old? (probably 40) party chief told me if I left the hammer in the truck I better have a good hard on to pound in the stakes for that day.
Reminds me of a joke. ?ÿIt is a visual. ?ÿInvolves a female crew member, and harkens back to the days of hand signals before regular walkie talkie usage.
We are done for the day. Box it up.
Decades ago when banks gave you a little book to record your deposits I just used my surveyor stamp to identify mine. One day while making a deposit the litle old lady teller saw the "L.S." after my name and asked if that meant I was a surveyor. When I said yes, she said "I know a cute joke about a girl surveyor, but I can't repeat it!" I asked it if was about a hammer and she said "Yes!".
