Maybe not so horrible. The author wrote My experience has taught me that using smartphones to conduct land surveys with apps is a great way of getting estimated figures, but ultimately, if you need precise measurements, a professional survey is still more accurate.?ÿNote the word estimated. On a positive note, people will get educated on surveying just by getting involved in the process, and maybe they'll be more appreciative of the services that we offer.

On the plus side it does have some cautions and doesn't claim to make professionals obsolete.

On the downside it mentions $500 for a survey.

It is also terribly wordy and repetitive-the info could be conveyed in 1/5 or 1/3 the words.

+And it doesn't tell you to rely on GIS to find the boundary.

Look at this sentence. You will find that there are additional buttons such as ƒ??archƒ?? and ƒ??curveƒ?? on just about every app that you work with. Are they talking about someone's arch or an arc? Doesn't anyone proofread anymore?

Sounds like a real estate agent being pissed off at a particular surveyor and writing three pages of junk to let some steam off.

On a more serious note, do you think that smartphone will ever get centimetre precision positioning? The scanning option on the new iPhones seems to be alright and could definitely be used in a pinch to generate a rough model of a tricky structure.

The doomsayers about surveying becoming obsolete can keep spouting nonsense. Just because drills and dropsaws are available to buy has not put carpenters out of a job. Giving people access to higher precision location services will not put a dent in demand for surveying services, if anything we'd just get more messes to sort out from the dilettantes that think surveying is easy.

Let's assume that cm-level precision is possible for a common smartphone.
The precision of a device isn't relevant unless one can with equal certainty know what/where is it measuring.

THRAC ALERT.

I was involved in a case a few years ago where the surveyor failed to pull the deed. The invoice for office and two man crew was $400. His office is 45 minutes from the site. That's not all...

When researching for penalties (saw that coming) we pulled his file from the early 90's. The first thing I found?ÿ was an invoice for a survey in the next block. Yupp, $400...

This is the wort part of the piece in my opinion. A cell phone is fine for the precision most people need when locating their boundary. The precision isn't why a land surveyor is valuable for boundaries. It's the accuracy. The only people who will be appreciative are those that make major mistakes in identifying the boundary. The others will think we are a rip off. Our increased precision is rarely worth the many thousands of dollars our boundary services cost (I hope non of us are actually doing boundary surveys for $500, how could you even do the research to prepare for for field work for that much?)

Thread hijack randomness avoidance czar

A nice title Jitterboogie created to suggest a need for someone to punish those who somewhat intentionally take the primary gist of the thread and bend it such that the conversation never returns to the intent of the original poster.

Or, something like that.

BTW, did you know a mountain in Ecuador has a tip that is thousands of feet further from the center of the Earth than the tip of Mount Everest?
