My Ranger may be toast, it's in the repair shop now and doesn't sound good. It has Survey Pro Max on it (just paid of an upgrade/update). Does TDS have a "transfer policy".

I believe it goes with the DC. If your DC is fried then your software is toast. I suspect a good dealer may be able to hook you up if you just upgraded etc. I hope...

If they tell you that you must buy a new software license, they are telling you that you need to get different software. You are the user. If your hardware bites the dust, so what.

Do as you wish but my advice is if they work with you to make things as hassle free as possible, great. If not, time to move to someone who will work with you.

That's been my experience too. Like Larry said below, I had the mind set that I purchased the software and the hardware is a completely different issue which should have no bearing on the use/transfer of the software to another device. I don't know what the EULA says, but my local dealer called Spectra Precision and told them, who it turn told me, that I was SOL.

They used to.

We recently upgraded our data collector and they "transferred" the software from our old data collector to the new one. In fact they didn't transfer anything, they just gave us some money for our trade in. At one time, this was their policy, but I don't know if thats still the case or not.

I don't think they will.
Carlson will. Be a good time to upgrade to Carlson.

I called TDS years ago about this issue. They were absolute - the software license goes with the serial number of a specific piece of hardware. No transfers under any circumstances.

Most dealers will give you a trade in credit for a new hardware/software combination, as long as the old one is working.

That might be a problem.

Like I said earlier. You bought the right to use the software on one piece of hardware. So long as that is what you are doing, if they want you to pay again for software, tell them you will be happy to do so but never again to their company. It is wrong to try to take advantage of your situation for their own gain.

As someone else said, Carlson has no problem letting you move software licenses to other hardware when one thing breaks, move it to something else.

I would actually love to test out Carlson, to see if it works well with my old Geodimeter 600 and Hiper Pro. Unfortunately, last I heard, the Carlson Robotics module was a little buggy when it came to Geo600/Trimble5600.

My fairly recent experience is that the software goes with the hardware. If the hardware fails, your software is considered to have failed along with it. They won't transfer it to a new data collector.

We are a Spectra dealer. The official stance from Spectra is that you can not transfer software from one data collector to another "non-new data collector". Spectra offers a trade in program, like someone above said. You buy their new hardware, either a T41, Ranger 3 or Nomad and they "transfer" the software from the old to new at a pretty good discount. In reality, no transfer really takes place. You actually receive a new data collector, with the newest version of the software and a new serial number. You modules (RTS, GPS, Max, Etc) are all that really stays the same.

There are quite a few options for the trade ins. If you do not have a local dealer you can email me and I will be happy to help you with it.

Why support a greedy business? Lots of honest companies need our support.

I sort of hate to say it, but their equipment is just so good that it is enough to cause me to "eat crow" on that. I have gone back and forth on the issue, but every time I use my S6 I am so pleased with it. I might change my mind in a week though! 🙂
