I got an email this morning from someone in Ajax Ontario. They asked if I could survey their property. Of course, I declined, nicely. But I did offer to send the contact information to a PLS located in that area.
Anyone here interested in discussing a survey in Ajax Ontario, Canada?

May I offering you my Surveyor from Indonesia ?,,, I lead many Surveyors here in Indonesia..
[sarcasm]Is that anywhere near Comet, Alaska?[/sarcasm]
Sent the guy a nice note explaining that I wasn't licensed to do work in that area.
Got back a note of shock that I didn't have a survey of that land laying around that I could send him.
I think I just decided to not worry about helping this person.

No good deed goes unpunished!:-)
Where are you from Larry?, I am wondering why they would call you in the first place...I am a couple provinces to the east but a little to far to travel, plus we are also not licensed in Ontario.

I am in North Carolina. No phone call from this person, just emails sent to my website.
I get this type thing from time to time. Am sure it is a function of the website. (www.landsurveys.com) People see the address and assume they can "buy a land survey" at that site. I also get quite a few messages from people who have decided that surveying looks like a cool job and how can they get a license in 30 days or so.
It really is true most of the public have no clue about what we do or what is required to get a license.

I've met folks at bbq's and such, that think I can just walk over and find their corners. When I explain the costs etc., they figure they don't need one. Along with the public not understanding our field, the low ballers and unlicensed people doing these $300 surveys don't help the rest of us either. I've also noticed many running to a county GIS Map, then building their fences or out buildings accordingly. It's almost funny how mad they get when a Surveyor discovers they are over their boundary by several feet. Then the "but the GIS said" argument gets started, while they think we are just stealing land for our clients. It would be nice to find a way to educate the public on our profession.
"You want aht much to stick four pins in the ground"....amazing isn't it.
Can only educate them one at a time, we for me at least.
I have surveyed in beautiful downtown Toronto, before. But, it wasn't anywhere near Canada. Canada is about 160 miles to the northwest of me while Cuba is more like 300 miles to the northwest while Havana is only 70 miles to the southwest. I've worked in Ottawa, also. Again, it wasn't anywhere near Canada. I've surveyed in Eureka by traveling there along the route that brings you to Climax first. Have surveyed in both Sycamore and Walnut. Please don't tell anyone, but, I have pounded stobs in Howard, Leroy and Benedict.
Larry-
Sent the whole matter, as set out on Beer Leg, to my colleague in that area.
Stay tuned a syou may get an E-mail.
Cheers
Derek

When I tell the person who inquired what the professional fee will be he'll probably decline. I'll then politely tell him to ask his Doctor or Dentist.

John,
Send me an email and I'll forward the note to you. I definitely got the impression this guy wanted to have someone pull a survey out of a drawer somewhere and charge him $10.
My email address is larry the at symbol landsurveys {dot} com.
