Yesterday, I was out about on some updates and running on-time.
I was approaching an intersection of 2 state hwys here. This intersection is a rapid growth area. It is located about a 1/4 mile from an interstate ent/exit.
Trafic more and more everyday. New HS recently built on one of the corners.
anyway...approaching the int. from a distance, I see 2 shirtless dudes at the c/l int.
I wonder waht is going on with them. When I get to the intersection, it is then that I see that they are surveyors. One has a rod and one ...don't ask me.
Then off to side side of the road there is another shirtless dude with a TS.
They all have identical field wear on. Blue jeans, some type of footwear, nice tans and some ink.
No cones, safety vests, signs nada.

Nice white PU along the road parked with sign /logo of one of the 'premier' Eng/Surveying/land development companies here.

I KNOW ..that this set of triplets may be the 'bestest' crew in the whole wide world and I am just making an observation here.

observations like the public was making through their windshield yesterday.

I honestly thoughtthat something odd was occuring as I approached them. Strange of me to see that it was only some dudes surveying at a busy intersection.

Yep,

I've seen those same guys in areas that I work.

I've seen the same dress code practiced by an NGS first-order leveling crew on Tchoupitoulas Street near Napoleon Avenue in years past. However, the NGS crew eschewed shoes, too.

They would not work for me after finding that out.

Cost one big Ohio outfit $10,000 (negotiated by attorney down from $100K) when an OSHA inspector drove by. Main infraction was lack of traffic vests.

An architect I spoke to yesterday asked me if AutoCad had a spell check feature.

I replied in the affirmative and inquired why she was asking.

She goes on to tell me that the last survey she received from a surveyor, there were 67 spelling errors on the survey. - She then said, "that maybe if she hires a smaller firm, that maybe greater care would be taken, as compared to the survey done by one of the 'Big Boys' that had those spelling mistakes".

Not I or anyone that works for me will look like that.

I prefer collared shirts or a brite lime green/orange company issue shirt to be worn under the vest at all times when working.

Going shirtless truly shows to me, lack of experience, lack of office control, and lack of class and tact.
Skin cancer is real and Field crews are the face of any company and profession.

Well, they definitely should have had safety stuff.

Other than that, I don't see what the problem is. I like to see people hard at work in the great outdoors. I do understand this is frowned on in the U.S., but I can never figure out why.

Truly unprofessional and disgusting. At a minimum they should be wearing wife beaters with a safety vest.

What a disgrace. I've seen the same in companies I've worked for as well and it makes my skin crawl. Not a professional image at all. I always wear collared shirts, preferably the Columbia shirts or the knock-off version's thereof when in the field.

Reminds me of a time we were running line in South Dakota and up on a hill past the ranch house. The transit man seemed to be slow in doing what he was supposed to be doing, so I went back to see what the problem was and he was looking through the scope, down at the ranch house. Well I had to take a look and there she was, topless and hanging out clothes on the line.

The chainmen were up beside us by now and of course they had to take a look. She sure was slow on hanging up the clothes as we didn't get anything done for an hour or so.

I take it you didn't go down and ask if she had the proper safety equipment:)

I spent the entire day surveying a shopping center, the high was 106, and I baked while wearing a safety jacket, but the way people drive in the parking lot I had no choice. At least if I get hit my widow's attorney can ask, "How could you not see him - he was wearing a safety jacket and carrying survey equipment."

In the field I wear jeans and at least a safety yellow or orange t-shirt, and usually a safety vest.

You have to look professional if you want to work with me.

I wear some lightweight pants and coolmax t-shirts, vest if needed. I can't understand why some would dress down in a professional job. If it's so hot you need your shirt off, it's too hot to be out there, in my opinion. As far as skin protection, spf 100 and a hat the crew chief teases me about (boonie), I burn easy too being a red haired freckled fellow with no hair on top!

Absolutely no one wants to see me without a shirt. Let alone the general public who don't deserve such abuse. So much white, so little evidence of a six-pack (beer or muscle).
